The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced two alternatives to the recommended 14-day quarantine after exposure to coronavirus COVID-19, on Wednesday, 12/2. The CDC still recommends a 14-day quarantine as the best way to prevent the spread of the disease. However, it now says self-isolation can be 10-days if the individual does not present any symptoms and 7-days if the individual also has a negative test. Individuals who come into contact with a person that is known to have the virus is asked to self-isolate and quarantine in case they get infected, develop the disease, and possibly spread it to others. COVID-19 is also known to be spread by asymptomatic carriers. The CDC says that they previously thought that incubation period could last 14-days, but now know most people develop symptoms between four and five says after exposure. This reduction in days will also help people resume their normal activities quicker. "We continue to refine our guidance to prevent transmission and protect Americans," Dr. Henry Walke, COVID-19 Incident Manager at the CDC, said. "Reducing the length of quarantine may make it easier for people to follow critical public health action by reducing the economic hardship associated with a longer period, especially if they cannot work during that time."

A New Jersey State Police recruit lost consciousness during a training exercise last week and died on Tuesday, 12/1. 27-year-old Lucas Homeijer of Boonton had been hospitalized in critical condition since the incident. It happened on November 25 at the state police training facility in Sea Girt, Monmouth County. State police said that Homeijer "was engaged in an active countermeasures/boxing bout with a fellow classmate" when he lost consciousness. "Academy staff immediately stopped the exercise, rendered first aid, and contacted emergency medical services to respond," they said. Homeijer was a member of the 161st academy class. His father and uncle had been troopers. He was also an Eagle Scout. "Lucas just had a life of service," State Police Superintendent Col. Pat Callahan said. The incident is under investigation.

An 18-year-old was killed and three juveniles were injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in Falls Township, Bucks County on Tuesday night, 12/1. It happened around 10 p.m. at the Commons at Fallsington Apartments on the unit block of Makefield Road. Falls Township Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute between two groups. The 18-year-old was shot in the chest. He was taken to Lower Bucks Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The three juveniles were taken to Jefferson Bucks Hospital and were treated for gunshot wounds and subsequently released. The investigation is ongoing.
