Carl Monzo, CEO of National Event Services and Head-of-Security for rock band Phish, passed away suddenly on Monday morning, 11/16.
National Events Services (NES) is located in Yeadon, Delaware County, and has been a family owned and operated business for 41 years. If you've been to a concert, festival, show, sporting event, or special event in the Philadelphia area in the past few decades you would have come across an NES employee. They provide staffing, security, and medical services for many of the major venues, arenas, and events throughout the region. They also provide these services for large festivals across the country like Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Stagecoach. NES works with touring acts Dead & Company and Phish.
Trey Anastasio, lead guitarist and vocalist for Phish, posted on Facebook, "I was heartbroken to hear that Carl Monzo, my friend and Phish's head of security for the past decade, passed away this morning. Phish is a family, and Carl was a beloved member of that family. Whenever I arrived at a venue on the bus, Carl's smiling face was always the first to welcome me. In the hallways outside of our dressing rooms, when we showed up at a venue and when we left at the end of the night, Carl was everywhere. He was always laughing and smiling, and made us feel safe and relaxed. My heart goes out to Carl's wife Pattyann, as well as to the rest of Carl's family. He will be deeply missed."
Carl told Relix magazine in 2018, "The first show we did with Phish was The Clifford Ball in '96, and, over the past 22 years, we've established a great relationship with them. We've worked with Phish on the medical side, the security side and, ultimately, went into the personal security side for the band."
Our hearts pour out for all our cousins in the Monzo family.
