| Montco Votes Schools Go Virtual for Two Weeks; Horsham Apt Fire; Johns Roast Pork Closes Temp. |

The Montgomery County Board of Public Health unanimously voted to move all schools, public and private, to virtual learning from November 23 to December 6. All school sanctioned extracurricular activities are also canceled. The vote was originally scheduled for Thursday, 11/12, but was pushed to Friday, 11/13. Thursday's hearing ran 2 1/2 hours and was full of public testimony from parents, teachers, and administrators. Most of the comments from the public asked the board members to keep the children in school or at least allow individual schools and districts to make to decisions themselves. Following the board's decision, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that its high schools and elementary schools in Montgomery County will follow the recommendations. Archdiocesan schools in the other counties will remain open.
"Montgomery County is currently experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases across the county with an associated rapid increase of hospitalizations related to COVID-19," Michael Laign, Chairman, said during hearing Friday afternoon. "Based on the experience from prior holidays during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is anticipated the traditional celebrations associated with the Thanksgiving holiday coupled with the high incidents of COVID-19 in Montgomery County have the potential to dramatically increase the spread of COVID-19."
Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, issued a statement Thursday saying in part: "The goal of this two-week return to 100% virtual education, which includes the Thanksgiving holiday and for most students equates to 8 days of virtual learning, is to help ensure that students, teachers and staff exposed to COVID-19 over the holiday have a week to learn that they have been exposed while still at home and out of the school environment. The success of this effort will hinge on all involved saying no to private social gatherings. I want to make clear that the goal of this proposed order is to increase the chances that in person school will be able to continue. By reducing the number of individuals who come to school with the coronavirus we maximize the chances that the excellent work that schools have been doing to limit in school transmission will continue to be successful."
Firefighters were called to the scene of a two-alarm apartment fire early Friday morning, 11/3, in Montgomery County. It happened around 5:30 a.m. at the The Addison at English Village Apartments on the 700 block of Lower State Road in Horsham. Residents were awoken by fire alarms and by neighbors banging on doors telling everyone to get out. Heavy smoke and fire could be seen coming from some second floor windows. Several people needed to be rescued but no one was seriously injured. About five apartments were damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
John's Roast Pork in South Philadelphia announced on Friday, 11/13, that the famous sandwich shop will be shutting down immediately and indefinitely after family members of two staff tested positive for COVID-19. John Bucci, owner, said on Facebook, "I am very sorry, but trying to do the responsible thing. In the meantime, I am going to have the shop DEEP CLEANED & SANITIZED!!!!" The store is planning a renovation in January. Last week, John's Roast Pork was part of a 'clue' on Jeopardy.

The Miami Marlins have hired Kim Ng as General Manager. Ng becomes the first female to be named GM of any men's professional team in North American sports. She is also the first Asian to lead a MLB team. Ng is a longtime MLB executive having just worked as senior vice president of baseball operations for the MLB since 2011. She also won three World Series rings while working in the front offices of the Chicago White Sox (1990-96), New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-11). |
