Man Arrested For 'Erratic Behavior' on Philly Flight; MontCo School Vote Delayed; Christmas Mass

Philadelphia Police took a man into custody on Thursday morning, 11/12, after 'exhibiting erratic behavior and making alarming comments' on an American Airlines flight from Orlando to Philadelphia. It happened at 9:18 a.m. on Flight 2392 on the flight's approach to Philadelphia International Airport. "While on approach into Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), the crew onboard Flight 2392 traveling from Orlando (MCO) became aware of a customer exhibiting erratic behavior and making alarming statements," American said in a statement. The man demanded access to the cockpit and wanted to talk to the pilot. "The cabin crew took precautionary measures and monitored the customer who remained seated for the remainder of the flight. Upon arrival at the gate, Philadelphia Police met the aircraft and placed the individual in custody." The airline said that the man did not use any force and did not "actively attempt to breach" the cockpit door. The man has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Montgomery County public health officials are considering stopping in-person learning at schools across the county for a two-week period around Thanksgiving starting November 23 in response to the recent rise of coronavirus COVID-19 cases. The Board of Health held a Zoom meeting on Thursday morning, 11/12, to hear public testimony and to vote. After 2 1/2 hours of public comment, the board decided to recess until Friday, 11/13, at Noon to vote. Parents, teachers, and administrators who were on the call were upset by the delay.

The vast majority of the public commenting during the virtual hearing were against the proposal. Parents, especially those with special needs, pleaded with officials to keep in-person learning open citing how much more engaging and effective it is. Parents who work (inside or outside the home) can't accommodate their work schedules and children learning at home. Many want the decision to be left to individual schools or districts. Some say schools are the safest place for children to be after the schools have put safety protocols into place to reopen this school year.

However, some agree that schools should be shutdown again along with other places where people gather to stop this wave of cases. Researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia recommend that schools in the Philadelphia area go back online through the holidays. "These next six to eight weeks, I believe, are the major challenge that we need to get through," Dr. David Rubin, the director of PolicyLab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said in an interview. "We are seeing catastrophic impacts in other areas of the country. We do not want any of that coming here." The Pennsylvania State Education Association, the state's largest teacher's union, said that school's should follow the advice of medical professionals and scientists. "We must follow these guidelines to the letter. It's the best way for us to slow the spread of this virus and keep our students, staff, and their families safe," said Rich Askey, the union president. "It is absolutely unacceptable for any school district to disregard the advice of medical professionals and scientists during a pandemic and put the safety of students, staff, and their families at risk."

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has released additional liturgical directives in relation to the upcoming seasons of Advent and Christmas in relation to coronavirus COVID-19. Here are key points:

- The faithful continue to be dispensed by the Archbishop from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation until further notice.

- Live stream services should continue for Mass and other sacramental celebrations and devotions.

- In the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, in accord with the current directives of the Commonwealth Pennsylvania and the Centers for Disease Control, the mitigating standards of sanitation, social distancing and numbers of occupancy, as already presented in the directives published on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 continue to be in force.

- Regarding the schedule for Masses for Christmas, the Anticipated Mass for Sundays and the Vigil Mass for Solemnities, like the Nativity of the Lord, are celebrated no earlier than 4:00 p.m. So, the first Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve can begin as early as 4:00 p.m.

- If there is a genuine need, the Vigil Mass for Christmas for a parish may be as early as 2:00 p.m.
