No Philly Mail-in Count Update Overnight; New Jersey Votes Legalize Pot; Trans DE State Senator Wins

Philadelphia City Commissioner Lisa Deeley told reporters on Tuesday night, 11/3, that election officials have counted and reported around 76,000 mail-in ballots out of 350,000. They will not be reporting anymore results from mail-in ballots until Wednesday morning. They will be working 24 hours a day until all ballots are counted. There are 150 workers working 8 hour shifts at the Pennsylvania Convention Center to process all the ballots. They can process about 10,000 ballots per hour. The mail-in ballot count will be updated at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Results from Election Day machine polls will continue to roll in tonight and be updated in real time.

"Each part can only go as quickly as any other part is going," City Commissioner Al Schmidt said. "We have an absolute army of people who work for our department directly that the rest of the city government has been extremely helpful in pitching in and pulling people from all different parts of city departments to help in this effort and if you see down there, it's just a nonstop undertaking."

New Jersey voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana. The ballot question asked to approve a constitutional amendment legalizing cannabis for personal, non-medical use for those 21 and older. Sales would be subject to the state's 6.625% sales tax. Local legislature can also pass a law that allows cities and towns to collect an additional 2% tax. It does not immediately become legal in the state. The Legislature will now have to pass legislation establishing a marketplace with regulation. It is expected to go quickly. Governor Murphy and the Legislature both support marijuana legalization. New Jersey joins 11 other states and the District of Columbia to legalize recreational use.

Arizona, Montana, and South Dakota voters also approved legalization at the ballot box. Mississippi approved medical marijuna. Oregon voted to decriminalize all drugs, including cocaine and heroine, and to legalize medicinal psychedelics to treat mental illnesses. Washington, DC voted to decriminalize psychedelic plants.

Sarah McBride made history on Tuesday by becoming the first transgender person, elected as a state senator in the United States. McBride won a seat from Delaware's District 1 located in the far northern part of the state. She succeeds Democrat Harris McDowell who held the seat since 1976. "I think tonight's results demonstrate what I've known my entire life, which is that the residents of this district are fair-minded, and they're looking at candidates' ideas and not their identity," McBride said Tuesday night. "It is my hope that a young LGBTQ kid here in Delaware or really anywhere in this country can look at the results and know that our democracy is big enough for them, too."
