A U.S. Supreme Court decision on Monday, 10/19, will allow mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania to be counted if they are received up to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 6, and they are postmarked by Election Day, November 3. Mail-in ballots without a clear postmark can also be counted unless there is evidence they were sent after the polls closed. The justices split 4-4 in their ruling, effectively upholding the state Supreme Court's decision. Democrats had sought the extension to count ballots due to concerns related to the postal service's ability to handle the delivery and return of ballots on time. Republicans opposed the extension, noting that Election Day is federally mandated. Voters can always drop off a completed ballot at their county election offices, at a drop off box, or at the polls on Nov 3 to avoid the mail. If you are planning on voting by mail and have not done so yet, don't wait until the last minute.
Philadelphia City Commissioners opened 5 new satellite election offices across the city on Monday, 10/19. These are in addition to the 12 that have been in operation. Monday is the last day to register to vote ahead of the November 3rd election in Pennsylvania. Over 9 million Pennsylvanians are registered to vote in this election, a record. After today, registered voters will still be able to go a satellite office to apply for a ballot, receive it in hand, and return it completed all in one trip. They can also drop off a completed mail-in ballot they received through the postal service. Register to vote online at: http://www.votespa.com
