Germantown Woman Blinded by Acid Attack; 4 Shot at Gas Station; FOP File Suit Over Ordinance

A Germantown woman remains blinded after being attacked with acid outside of her home last week. It happened around 6:15 a.m. October 6 on the 5100 block of Newhall Street. 61-year-old Helen Jones was on the sidewalk outside her home walking to her car parked out front to go to her job as a phlebotomist. She was approached by a man who asked, "Hey, are you good?" As Jones looked up to respond "Yes," the man threw the chemical in her face and ran off. She suffered burns to her lips, tounge, and eyes. "(The doctors) just said that she's blind. They couldn't tell us if she would get her vision back or not," said her daughter, Aneesha Summerville. Jones did not know her attacker. He was wearing a mask so she didn't get a good look at him. Police are looking into surveillance footage from the area. They say the man may have chemical burns on his own hands from handling the acid.

UPDATE: The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of a suspect.

A gas station employee is in critical condition after a quadruple shooting in Southwest Philadelphia on Wednesday night, 10/14. It happened around 7 p.m. at a gas station at 69th Street and Buist Avenue. "He was still working and he was still inside of the garage when some sort of argument took place that escalated and led to the shooting," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The 28-year-old employee was shot eight times throughout his body. A 32-year-old man was shot in the right arm, another 32-year-old man was shot once in both the left and right thighs, and a fourth man was shot once in the left shoulder. All four were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The other three are in stable condition. Police found 15 shell casings in front of the garage and three casings behind the garage on the 6900 block of Theodore Street. No arrests have been made. The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, the Philadelphia police officer's union, filed suit to block a recently passed ordinance that would require a public hearing prior to the police contract negotiation process. The hearing would occur 30-days before the City of Philadelphia sends an initial contract proposal to the FOP and is meant to give the public more input and insight into the contract process. "This legislation seeks to mandate public transparency and accountability in a process that has been shrouded in secrecy for far too long," said bill sponsor Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson. "We can no longer afford to have these important discussions happen behind closed doors."

"This is an attempt by City Council to once again demonize and target hardworking Philadelphia police officers and FOP leadership," FOP Lodge 5 President John McNesby said. "The union and its 6,500 members are opposed to this ordinance because the collective bargaining process is already governed by state law." McNesby also points out that no other public employees union, for example firefighters, is subject to a public hearing before contract negotiations.
