Pennsylvania's 2nd Lady Gisele Barreto Fetterman shared video to Twitter of an incident outside of a Pittsburgh-area supermarket on Sunday in which she was verbally assaulted by a women. Fetterman says that the woman recognized her as the 2nd Lady while she was in the store and began to curse at her and say racially bigoted remarks. She followed her all the way out and to her car calling her names. Fetterman usually has a state trooper escort but decided to do a short shopping trip in Braddock, PA on her own. The 38-year-old moved to the United States from Brazil with her family at the age of 8. She has been married to Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman since 2008 and they have three children. She considers herself Latina.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf's statement:
"The ethnic intimidation and racist speech spewed at the Second Lady of Pennsylvania is shameful and unacceptable. Racism and hate speech are always unacceptable, and unworthy of Pennsylvanians. No Pennsylvanian should ever be made to feel unwelcome in our commonwealth because of their race or ethnicity. Gisele Fetterman spends much of her time devoted to making our state and world a better place and she - and every Pennsylvanian - deserves our respect, not the hatred too often displayed by people who seek only to further divide this country at a time when unity is so desperately needed.
"The Second Lady has my and Frances's full support and gratitude for her tireless work to make Pennsylvania the diverse, inclusive place it is today, even in the face of such ignorance and adversity."
New Jersey Phil Murphy announced on Monday, 10/12, that contact practices and competitions can resume for sports and activities deemed "medium risk" and "high risk." This includes hockey, basketball, cheerleading, group dance, rugby, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, and wrestling. Indoor practices or competitions are limited to 25% capacity, but not more than 25 or less than 10 persons. However, if the number of people necessary for the practice or competition (players, coaches, referees) exceeds 25 persons, you can still proceed only if there are no other unnecessary persons in the room, like spectators. Even still, the 25% capacity limit applies and no more that 150 people max. "The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for our student-athletes, support staff, and school communities," Gov. Murphy said. "After consulting stakeholders and medical experts, we have concluded that, with proper public health and safety protocols in place, indoor sports may now resume in a way that protects players, coaches, and staff."

A 5-year-old boy is dead and his mother is injured after a drowning and stabbing in West Philadelphia on Monday night, 10/12. It happened before 10:30 p.m. in a residence on the 4800 block of Pine Street. The boy's 40-year-old father returned home and discovered the boy face down in a tub of water with a cut to his neck. Medics tried to revive him with CPR. He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m. The 40-year-old mother has self inflicted cuts to the wrists. She was taken to the hospital with minor lacerations and in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE: Police believe the mother is responsible and is currently in police custody. “We believe there’s a possibility the 40-year-old mother may have some mental health issues, and stabbed herself in the wrist and also caused the laceration to her 5-year-old son’s neck,†Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. |
