Surveillance of Election Warehouse Robber; Shooting at Vigil, Video; Princeton Honors Black Alumna

Philadelphia Police have released surveillance video of a suspect wanted in the burglary of a warehouse used to store City of Philadelphia election equipment. Police are looking for the public's help in identifying the man. It happened around 1 p.m. Sunday, 9/27, at the ES_S warehouse on the 3500 block of Scotts Lane in East Falls. The man stole a laptop, 8 USB drives, Bluetooth speakers, headphones, phone chargers, and an extension cord. Officials say that the laptop did not contain any election information and the user account was disabled and the device address was blocked. They also said that the USB drives are encrypted and "contain multiple levels of security." The city commissioner's office said in a statement, "We are confident that this incident will not in any way compromise the integrity of the election." The suspect is described as a Black male, 30-40 years-of-age, thin build, approximately 5' 5" - 5' 7" in height. Shots rang out on Friday night, 10/9, during an anti-violence rally and vigil in West Philadelphia. It was caught on video. The vigil was being held for 19-year-old Donovan Porter who was shot and killed inside a take out restaurant on Tuesday, 10/6. There were between 100-150 people on the 5200 block of Warrington Avenue listening to speeches about gun violence. Suddenly gun fire broke out and the crowd turned into chaos. No one was hurt by the shots, but several people got caught up in the stampede and suffered some bumps and bruises. Police arrived quickly, but the gunman has not been found.

Princeton University announced that it will rename the residential college (freshman dormitory) previously named for Woodrow Wilson for a Black alumna and donor. Mellody Hobson graduated from Princeton in 1991. She is now the co-CEO of Ariel Investments. Hobson started at Ariel as an intern in 1989 and rose to lead the company. She gave an undisclosed seed donation along with the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation to fund the reconstruction of the dorm. Hobson is married to director/producer George Lucas. "When I was approached last year about this opportunity, I was most compelled by the symbolism of a Black woman replacing the name of someone who would have not supported my admission three decades ago," Hobson said in a video on the university's website announcing the donation. In June, Princeton decided to remove Wilson's name from the public policy school and the residential college citing his racist views and support for segregation. In addition to being a former President of the United States, Wilson served as president of the university for 8 years and banned Black students from enrolling. The new residential college is expected to be complete in 2026.
