New Details in Remains of Young Smyrna Girl; St. Basil Academy Closing; West Chester U. Online 2021

Authorities have released new details about the remains of a young child found in a Delaware park last year. The child has been identified as 3-year-old Emma Cole. She was discovered on September 13, 2019 at Little Lass Fields in Smyrna, DE. A person walking their dog came across the uncovered, unburied remains in an open area near softball field. Police have idenitified two persons-of-interest. Former Smyrna residents, 38-year-old Brandon Haas and 28-year-old Kristie Haas are in custody in another state. No other information has been released. The investigation is ongoing.

St. Basil Academy in Jenkintown, a college preparatory school for young women, announced on Thursday, 10/8, that it will be closing after the 2020-21 academic year. Financial hardship started at least last year, but was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have, sadly, come to the realization that we simply cannot overcome the monumental financial and enrollment challenges facing our School, due to the decreased enrollment and less revenue through tuition. After careful and exhaustive evaluation, the Provincial Council of the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great recently made the painful, but necessary, decision to close Saint Basil Academy at the completion of the 2020-2021 school year. This is not a decision we make lightly. It is, however, the decision we are charged to make." The all-girls high school in suburban Philadelphia was founded in 1931 by the Sisters of Saint Basil.

West Chester University announced that remote learning will continue through the spring semester, along with some hybrid classes. The school also announced that winter and spring sports have been canceled. There has been an increase in coronavirus COVID-19 cases in the West Chester area. The mayor declared a state of emergency last week. Most of the new positive cases were in the 18-22 year age group and concentrated in the rental community. "I can tell you I take no joy in making this decision but our primary objective is the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff," said West Chester University President Dr. Christopher Fiorentino.
