| Laptop, USBs Stolen From Election Warehouse; Airlines Furlough Workers; Man Shoots/Kills Trans Woman |

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a laptop and encrypted USB flash drives were stolen during a break in at an election machine warehouse in East Falls on Tuesday night, 9/29. It happened at Election Systems and Software (ES&S), a voting machine manufacturer, located on the 3500 block of Scotts Lane. Officials are confident that the breach will not affect the upcoming election. "The laptop did not hold any sensitive data related to elections," a ES&S spokesperson said. "It was not used to program the election or interact with USBs used in elections. The USBs are encrypted and contain multiple levels of security." The employee's account has been changed and that laptop device has been blocked from the network. The spokesperson said, "This encryption is so powerful; it would take the world's fastest supercomputer millions of years to crack." Mayor Jim Kenney said, "This matter should not deter Philadelphians from voting, nor from having confidence in the security of this election." Anyone with information on the theft should call Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS.
Major U.S. airlines told employees on Wednesday, 9/30, that they will begin furloughing thousands of workers as the Payroll Support Program of the CARES Act expired at the end of September. The PSP was part of the CARES Act that passed in March. The airline industry was given $25 billion to keep employees on payroll. The industry is petitioning Congress to pass new legislation to extend the program. American Airlines will furlough 19,000 workers (1,000 in Philadelphia) while United Airlines expects to sideline 13,000. There is bipartisan support for legislation to help the airline industry whenever a new relief package can be signed.
A man has been charged in the murder of a transgender woman after police discovered her shot inside his car during a routine traffic stop. 28-year-old Abdullah Ibn Elamin Jaamia is charged with murder and other related offenses. It happened around 8 a.m. Monday, 9/28, near 41st Street and Westminister Avenue. Philadelphia police pulled over Jaamia in his 2006 Jeep Wrangler after he disregarded a stop sign. Police say that Jaamia exited his vehicle and told police that his passenger, 29-year-old Mia Green, was suffering from a gun shot wound. She had been shot in the neck. Police escorted them to Penn-Presbyterian Hospital. She died at the hospital at 8:30 a.m. After an investigation, Police determined Jaamia was responsible for her death. No word on what led up to the shooting.
Philadelphia's Office of LGBT Affairs released this statement, "On Monday, September 28, Philadelphia's LGBTQ community lost another one of our siblings. While the details around Mia Green's death are the subject of an ongoing investigation, we know that the loss of yet another trans community member of color is especially painful, no matter the circumstances.
This latest act of violence against a member of our community is a somber reminder of the epidemic of violence against trans individuals. It is a crisis that cannot be allowed to persist any further. The countless painful losses experienced during this year alone-especially within our transgender communities of color- remind us that there is much work to be done in the pursuit of full equality, respect, and justice for us all.
We remain committed to ensuring that acts of discrimination, bigotry, and hatred are never tolerated in the city of Philadelphia.
