Homeless Protest Camps Celebrate Tentative Agreement; Missing 1-month-old; Bicyclist Hit With Bat

Organizers of the homeless protest encampments in Philadelphia announced that they have a tentative agreement with the City of Philadelphia to resolve the 3+ month standoff. Philadelphia Housing Action says that the City and Philadelphia Housing Authority will give 50 vacant and viable homes to the activists. They will be transferred into a community land trust. That number includes 15 city-owned houses currently taken over by mothers and children. "The land trust will permanently designate the properties for use as extremely low-income housing ($25,000 and below) and be managed by local control committees."

"This will be a landmark agreement," said #OccupyPHA organizer Jennifer Bennetch. "Not only has a group of poor and homeless organizers managed through direct action to win an agreement that will set a precedent for the entire country, but we have also forced the city to exercise its power of the Philadelphia Housing Authority and finally get them to give up these vacant homes that have been blighting our communities for decades. We will continue to pressure the city to transfer more houses to be designated as permanent low-income housing, stabilize our communities and combat the displacement caused by market rate development and gentrification."

The City did not confirm the deal. "The City remains in negotiation with the representatives of the protest camps, but many details remain to be worked out," the city said in a statement. "Any agreement will require a date certain by which the protest camps will be resolved." The encampments appeared in June. Two currently stand, one on the Ben Franklin Parkway and one on Ridge Ave. Activists did take down barricades blocking 22nd Street.

Philadelphia Police are asking for the public's help in finding a 1-month-old baby boy. James Brown was last seen on Thursday, September 24, on the 5500 block of Spruce Street in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia. Police say that the baby was last seen by his father, James Garrett, who is not cooperating. Garrett is the boy's primary care giver. The infant boy is approximately 10 pounds, with black eyes, black hair and a light brown complexion. If you have any information, contact Southwest Detective Division at 215-686-3183 or 911. UPDATE: Philadelphia Police said early Monday morning, 9/28, that the baby boy has been found safe. He is being evaluated at St. Christopher's Hospital as a precaution.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after two bicyclists were attacked on Saturday morning, 9/26, in Wissahickon Park. It happened just before 10:30 a.m. on the Wissahickon Bike Path between Historic Rittenhouse Town and the parking lot at Forbidden Drive and Lincoln Drive (Ten Box). The two were riding along when a man carrying bags jumped down from the rocks above and assaulted one of them with a baseball bat. The man then ran off. The police and park rangers were notified. The suspect has not be apprehended.

Sports
The Philadelphia Phillies ended the pandemic shortened 2020 season with a 5-0 loss against Tampa Bay Rays. The Phils finished the season 28-32 missing the extended playoffs by 1 game. The Phillies have not made the playoffs since 2011. It was a strange 2 months of baseball that we can't forget soon enough. There is a lot of work for the front office to do in the off season between signing key roster players to long term contracts and finding a serviceable bullpen.
