Philly Treasurer Fired, Facing Federal Charges; Catholic League Will Play; Arrest in Trans Attack

U.S. Attorney William McSwain announced charges against the treasurer of the City of Philadelphia on Friday afternoon, 9/25. 40-year-old Christian Dunbar is facing several federal charges including bank embezzlement and immigration fraud. None of these crimes occurred when he working for the City. He is accused of stealing $15,000 from two bank customers when he worked for Wells Fargo Bank in Newtown Square, PA. Between 2015-16, he got the two victims to sign blank deposit slips and he later used them to deposit money to his account. Dunbar is originally from Liberia. In 2006, he and his wife entered into 'sham' marriages with U.S. citizens to gain entry into the country. He started working for the City in 2016 as deputy treasurer and was promoted to treasurer in 2019. Dunbar went to Temple University and was captain of the football team. His grandfather was president of Liberia for 27 years and he is a descendent of Harriet Tubman.

"The criminal complaint announced today does not involve Christian Dunbar's work with the City of Philadelphia. But in light of the allegations, his employment has been terminated effective immediately. At the same time, I have asked Inspector General Alexander DeSantis to begin a thorough review of the City Treasurer's Office during the time of Dunbar's employment as both Deputy Treasurer and Treasurer. This review can help resolve any concerns about the Office's conduct and transactions during this period," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement.

The Philadelphia Catholic League has decided to resume fall sports for the 2020 season. It had initially planned to opt out on August 24. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia said in a statement on Friday, 9/25, "The Office of Catholic Education and Faith in the Future Foundation are pleased to announce that the Archdiocese of Philadelphiaâ€™s 17 high schools may resume interscholastic athletic competition while continuing to strictly follow health and safety guidelines." Some of the league's independent schools (La Salle, St. Joe's, Devon Prep) have already agreed to play a schedule of fall sports competition against each other including Holy Ghost.

"Since the late August announcement, our school administrators have worked closely with senior leadership from the Office of Catholic Education and Faith in the Future to meticulously study pandemic metrics, guidelines, and school COVID profiles as part of our continuous assessment process. After carefully reviewing all possible factors, including the successful opening of our schools, we believe the environment has changed for the better over the past month," says Sister Maureen L. McDermott, I.H.M., Ph.D., Superintendent of Secondary Schools. She continued, "We understand and value the importance of athletics as part of the program of formation within our high schools. We express our gratitude to our school communities for their trust and support while we appropriately deliberated how to bring back athletic programs with a commitment to safety in these unprecedented times."

Philadelphia Police have made an arrest in the brutal attack of a transgender woman in her home in South Philadelphia back in August. 34-year-old Tymesha Wearing of the 800 block of South Alden Street is facing numerous charges including ethnic intimidation and aggravated assault. It happened around 11 p.m. on Monday, 8/24, on the 1200 block of South 22nd Street in Point Breeze. 34-year-old Kendall Stephens was at home with her husband, 12-year-old goddaughter, and another child. She says that a crowd of people were causing a ruckus outside, making noise, and throwing bottles. She told the group to quiet down or she would call 911. That is when she was attacked. They kicked in her door, beat her in the face several times, and called her bigoted remarks related to her gender. According to District Attorney Larry Krasner, Wearing can't be charged with a hate crime because LGTBQ individuals aren't protected in the PA hate crimes statute.
