NJ Passes Ban on Paper, Plastic, Styrofoam; Shots Fired Behind Bucks HS; Man Killed West Oak Lane

New Jersey lawmakers have passed a bill that would ban single use plastic and paper bags as well as plastic foam containers. Several states have bans on plastic bags or Styrofoam containers, but New Jersey would be the first to have an outright ban on paper bags. Some other states also allow customers to chose paper or plastic for a fee, but that would not be an option in the Garden State. Governor Phil Murphy is expected to sign the bill passed by the Democratic-led Legislature. The ban wouldn't take effect until 18 months after it is signed. Shoppers would have to bring their own reusable bags whenever going to the store. As for non-styrofoam food containers, there are a number of different options that restaurants could use that are made from a variety of compostable and biodegradable materials, but they are expensive. Plastic straws will still be available upon request, but not given out automatically.

Police in Bucks County are looking for a suspect who fired shots on the grounds of a high school while sports activities were underway. It happened on Wednesday afternoon, 9/23, just before 5 p.m. at William Tennent High School in Warminster. Police say that a man chased someone behind the school and fired two shots. It is not clear if the target was injured, but none of the athletes at practice were injured. The suspect got into a gray colored sedan and left the area. The gunman is described as a Black male, 5' 10" - 6' tall, thin build, with black hair. He was wearing a dark green t-shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers, and a mask. A man wearing a Burger King uniform was found shot and killed in West Oak Lane early Thursday morning, 9/24. The man was found on the sidewalk just after midnight on the 7100 block of North 19th Street. There was an SUV nearby with a bullet hole and a trail of blood leading to the victim. The victim is in his late teens or early twenties. He was not wearing any shoes, but investigators found sneakers in the road. They believe he must have run out of his shoes trying to get away. Eight shell casings were recovered from the scene. A car matching the description of the suspect's vehicle was found abandoned in a nearby driveway. That vehicle was recently stolen in Northeast Philadelphia. Police believe there may be three or four suspects involved.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Mekhi Parlow.
