| Philly Catholic Teachers Vote on Contract; Deadly NE Home Invasions; Linvilla Orchards Opening |

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Office of Catholic Education Secondary School System and the Association of Catholic School Teachers, Local 1776 (ACT) have reached a two-year agreement for high school teachers at the system's 17 Catholic high schools in the Philadelphia area. The teachers voted on Friday afternoon, 9/11, to ratify that agreement. Earlier this week, teachers voted to extend the previous contract and stay in the classroom while negotiations continued so that students could return to school. The 17 high schools are all using a hybrid model where half the student body attends in-person and the other half attend virtually on alternating days. The new contract "included some additional professional responsibilities, a salary increase and no change or increase to the medical benefit plan." This does not effect teachers of parochial or regional elementary school.
Statement from Jason Budd, Chief Negotiator for the Office of Catholic Education: (full statement below)
"Earlier today, the Secondary School System of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Association of Catholic School Teachers, Local 1776 (ACT) reached a two-year agreement on a new contract for full-time, lay high school teachers in the seventeen Archdiocesan secondary schools serving the five-county region.
The Office of Catholic Education (OCE) is pleased that the general membership of ACT ratified the contract today.  It was exciting to have our students and teachers back for the 2020-2021 school year on schedule earlier this week. The hybrid instructional model we have in place is designed to support the health and safety of our school communities and enhance the academic achievement levels of our students. With today’s announcement, we are able to move forward without interruption for the benefit of the students and school families we serve."
Philadelphia Police are investigating two deadly possible home invasions in Northeast Philadelphia overnight. The first happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, 9/10, on the 1200 block of Fuller Street in Fox Chase. Police found a 21-year-old man shot several times in the chest and neck lying on the living room couch. There was cash, jewelry, and 6 shell casings nearby. "The second-floor front bedroom, you can see that the window blinds were pushed out, they're damaged. It appears that someone may have exited from that second-floor front bedroom and jumped onto the front lawn because there is some disturbance on the front lawn. There's a light that's knocked over, there appears to be a footprint from someone jumping," Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.
The second happened around 3:30 a.m. Friday, 9/11, on the 3000 block of Glenview Street in Mayfair. Police say that four men broke in through a basement door in the back of the house. A 24-year-old man inside was shot to death. All four intruders got away. Investigators found drugs at the home. No arrests have been made in either case.
Linvilla Orchards in Media, Delaware County, is opening up its famous Pumpkinland this weekend. The hayrides and pumpkin picking will be open to families this year from September 12 to November 8. There will be changes this year due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic to ensure everyone is safe. Masks are required and you have to buy timed tickets for hay rides and mazes to ensure social distancing and capacity limits. There will not be any school trips this year, but that also means lost of space to find your perfect pumpkin. "We're going to have extra staff," Linvilla Orchards farm manager Norm Schultz said. "We've spread out our registers. We have marks on the floor in the market. On the hay wagons, we have 40% capacity. You'll be six feet away from other customers. Families can be tight together in the wagons but you’ll notice a less crowded wagon, and we're just hoping to make everybody happy."

Since July 2020, the focus of the OCE negotiating team has been to achieve a contract focused on the young people entrusted to our care. The newly ratified labor management agreement allows schools to continue to thrive by providing a means to respond efficiently and effectively to the rapid pace of change that is a natural part of the 21st century educational landscape. It also provides the latitude to respond effectively and rapidly and to the unique circumstance of a pandemic.Â
We are deeply grateful to our teachers for voting to extend their contract earlier this week. It enabled them to be present for their students while the negotiating teams resolved outstanding issues. That course of action truly demonstrated their commitment as Catholic educators. Â We are also thankful to our teachers for ratifying the two-year agreement which included some additional professional responsibilities, a salary increase and no change or increase to the medical benefit plan.
OCE is most thankful for the sacrifices school families make for their children and takes its responsibility seriously to create classroom environments where excellence in faith formation, teaching and learning is paramount. |
