| Philly Dining to Remain 25%, Outdoors to 150; 11yo Bensalem Girl Shot; Zoombombing in Philly Classes |

Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley announced on Thursday, 9/10, that indoor dining in the city will remain at 25% capacity for the time being. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Tuesday, 9/8, that restaurants in the state could move to 50% capacity starting September 21 after going through a self-certification process. Indoor dining in Philadelphia only just reopened on Tuesday. Farley said that the city will continue to monitor the situation including case rates in Philadelphia and the performance of the 50% capacity in restaurants in the state. Heath officials could revisit their decision in October. "As a city that's been hit hardest by the epidemic, in the past we've said we will be more restrictive than the state if we think it's necessary to protect Philadelphia residents. That's the case now," Farley said.
Farley did announce that starting Monday, September 14, that outdoor gatherings can have a maximum of 150 people, an increase from 50. It is still recommended that you wear a mask and try to maintain distance. He also recommends not serving food or drink so people do not have to take off their mask. Farley says that all gatherings, regardless of size or location, have a risk of spread, but that being outdoors is less risky than indoors.
An 11-year-old girl was shot in the face on Wednesday night, 9/9, after opening the door to her home in Bensalem, Bucks County. It happened just before midnight on the 1900 block of Fairland Avenue. The girl simply answered a knock at the door and the suspect fire several shots. Police say that the girl suffered significant facial trauma but is expected to recover. Investigators do not believe this was a random act, but that the girl was probably not the intended target. The suspect is simply described as a man maybe wearing a face covering. 'Zoom-bombing' is back and this time it's hitting the virtual classroom. In the spring, when many people first took to the video conferencing software to telework, tele-heath, tele-birthday, etc. online meetings were subject to attack by pranksters (malicious and merry). Then consumers changed their behavior and the software designers adapted code and squashed that unpleasant phenomenon (mostly) Pranksters were thwarted using a combination of passwords, private meetings, and waiting rooms.
The School District of Philadelphia started all virtual this week. They apparently did not learn lessons from last spring. Superintendent Dr. William Hite said that there were several 'zoom-bombing' instances this week. "We had an incident, a student that had what appeared to be a firearm. He had gone into a different class at a different school to show everyone. That turned out to be a BB gun," Hite said. "We've had three incidents that I know of, individuals moving into other classes to either disrupt or do a prank." Imagine if in the real world a student or someone else could pop right in to a classroom at a different school. "I want to be clear, we have zero tolerance for this type of behavior and anyone participating in these Zoom pranks will be held accountable for their actions," said Dr. Hite. The school district says that they have increased security measures on their platform and trained teachers to use waiting rooms to prevent the intruders. |
