Temple Goes Virtual for Rest of Fall; PA Allows Fans at Fall Sports; Philly Protest Over Evictions

Temple University in Philadelphia announced on Thursday, 9/3, that it will be moving most classes online until the end of the fall semester due to a coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. In-person classes were paused earlier this week due to an increase in cases, but that two-week suspension has now been extended. As of 9/3, there are 237 active cases on campus. Only a few classes deemed 'essential' will continue in-person. Students can get a refund for room and board if they decide to leave campus by September 13, but all students are welcome to stay. Contact tracing has linked most cases to off-campus apartments or small social gatherings. The students who have tested positive are either asymptomatic or have mild/moderate symptoms.

"In light of the recent increase in positive test results among our students, and after consultation with our own healthcare professionals and leaders at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, we have concluded that the data indicate it is time to pivot to primarily online education, as we said we would be prepared to do," President Richard Englert and Executive Vice President and Provost JoAnne Epps said in a statement.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has relaxed the restriction on spectator attendance at fall interscholastic sports, but statewide gathering limits will prevent many from attending anyway. The state currently limits indoor gatherings to 25 people and outdoor gatherings to 250 people. The new guidance from the state says that "spectators may attend sporting events," but after the players, coaches, etc. there aren't if any spaces left for fans at indoor sports like girl's volleyball or water polo. Outdoor events, like football, may be able to accommodate one parent per player with the remaining spots. "Schools might have to be creative if they have large teams, bands and cheerleaders," PIAA spokesperson Melissa Mertz said.

Philadelphia Police detained at least a dozen protesters early Thursday afternoon, 9/3, who were blocking the entrances to Philadelphia Municipal Court and the District Attorney's Office. The demonstration was led by the Philly Tenants Union and demanded the stoppage of tenant eviction proceedings in the court. Pennsylvania's moratorium on evictions and foreclosures expired after Monday 8/31. The 17 protesters who were detained were then cited for failure to disperse and released.
