Gov Wolf to Let Eviction Moratorium Expire; Arrest in Deadly Crash; Suspects Wanted in Trans Assault

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf will not be extending the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures that ends today, August 31. Wolf said last week that he did not have legal authority to extend his executive order and pushed the General Assembly to pass legislation. Earlier Monday, when asked about the deadline Wolf said, "you have to wait and see," making it sound like he might reverse his decision. His office later said, "But after a thorough legal review, we have determined that the governor cannot extend the executive order to reach additional Pennsylvanians who are not benefiting from the federal extensions and a legislative fix is necessary in order to protect homeowners and renters from eviction." The Federal Housing Administration extended protection through December for FHA-insured single family mortgages. The PA House of Representatives returns to session on Tuesday, September 1. The PA Senate returns next week. Courts could start to see eviction proceedings begin.

Philadelphia Police have arrested a man in connection to a deadly crash over the weekend that killed two young children. Alimamy Sesay has been charged with multiple counts of third-degree homicide, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and other related charges. It happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday on Hunting Park Avenue near Kensington Avenue. A family of four was traveling in a Toyota Corolla when they were hit by a white BMW. The two brothers, ages 7 and 9 (Jacier and Kariel), were ejected from the car. They were taken to St. Christopher's Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The mother was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition. She has a fractured spine. The father suffered facial lacerations, but did not require medial attention. After the crash, Sesay made a U-turn and drove a short distance before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot with his passenger. He was apprehended later.

Philadelphia Police have released surveillance video and are looking to identify six people after a transgender woman was beaten inside of her South Philadelphia home last week. It happened around 11 p.m. on Monday, 8/24, on the 1200 block of South 22nd Street in Point Breeze. 34-year-old Kendall Stephens was at home with her husband, 12-year-old goddaughter, and another child. She says that a crowd of people were causing a ruckus outside, making noise, and throwing bottles. She told the group to quiet down or she would call 911. That is when she was attacked. They kicked in her door, beat her in the face several times, and called her bigoted remarks. The surveillance video was taken from Stephens' front door security camera. Three men and three women were highlighted. If you have any information, call police at 215-686-TIPS.
