Atilis Gym Fined $130k By Judge; Philly Indoor Dining Sept. 8; Free Student Access Centers

A judge in New Jersey has fined the owners of a Bellmawr, Camden County gym around $130,000 for their actions repeatedly defying Governor Phil Murphy's executive orders. Owners Ian Smith and Frank Trumbetti reopened their Atilis Gym in May despite the orders to keep certain nonessential businesses closed. They received several summonses, citations, and were arrested for contempt. Superior Court Judge Robert Lougy issued a fine of almost $125,000 for violating a court order on eight days between Aug. 1-14. They also have to pay about $10,500 to the state for the legal costs of its contempt of court action. Lougy said the gym could not "ignore orders with which it does not agree."

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced on Thursday, 8/20, that indoor dining will be allowed to resume in the city on Tuesday, September 8, the day after Labor Day. Restaurants will be limited to 25% capacity. Tables will be spaced out to ensure social distancing and there will be no more than 4 seats per table. Patrons cannot sit at the bar, and alcohol can only be served if it is ordered with your meal. Servers must wear masks and face shields. Patrons must wear a mask when not at their table.

Movie theaters and live theaters will also be allowed to reopen on 9/8. They will be limited to 25 persons. Patrons must wear masks inside the theater at all times. No food should be served, so no popcorn or candy.

Philadelphia Mayor Kenney announced that the city will be opening at least 31 free "Access Centers" across the city to host students during the school day. Eligible students will be able to stay at the centers and participate in their digital learning. Each center will accommodate 22 students. Priority will be given to "students with the highest need who can't safely stay at home during the school day." The centers are for 1) K-6 students 2) students whose caretakers work outside the home and can't afford childcare 3) have no in-home internet. Registration will be required.

They will be located at Parks and Recreation rec centers, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and Philadelphia Housing Authority sites. The program will start September 8, and operate weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students will receive meals and have recreational activities. More information will come next week.
