5 Injured at Block Party Shooting; Philly's Violent Weekend, Dozens Shot; Woman Surrenders Barricade

Philadelphia Police are investigating after 5 people were shot and injured during a large block party in North Philadelphia on Saturday night, 8/15. It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 10th and Brown Streets. Police were already responding around the block to the area of 9th and Parish Streets for the reports of a large block party. There were around 200 young people gathered. Shots broke out between two groups when police arrived. Shots were also fired at officers, but they did not return fire. Five males between the ages of 16 and 26 were injured. They were taken to Temple University Hospital and are in stable condition. Investigators found 28 casings from an AR-15 and 10 casings from a .40 caliber gun. No officers were injured. "There were a lot of people out here," Commissioner Outlaw said. "We do believe that someone knows who the shooters were and could possibly help us in identifying, figuring out exactly what happened."

Violence in Philadelphia once again is the headline after another weekend of deadly shootings. At least 7 people were killed and over 30 people were shot in over 30 shooting incidents since 9 p.m. Friday, 8/14. There were also three stabbing incidents. Homicides are up 27% and shooting victims 55% since this time last year. "It's disturbing, it's disheartening. Again, the pandemic has not been canceled," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. "You know, there's a lot of things that bring us pause and concern. But again, day in and day out we will be here."

A woman surrendered to police after a barricade situation in Northeast Philadelphia on Sunday morning, 8/16. It happened at an apartment on the 3600 block of Red Lion Road. A emotionally disturbed pregnant woman approached a police officer with a weapon that was fixed with a laser scope. He tried to talk to the woman but she went back into her apartment and wouldn't come out. A barricade situation was declared at 10:43 a.m. She eventually surrendered to police at 12:08 p.m. The weapon was determined to a BB gun. The woman was taken to the hospital. "The woman that came out, with a gun and said that she was going to kill herself. As a result she had it pointed to an officer who showed great restraint," said Philadelphia Police Lt. Jeff Campbell. "The officer came up to the location for a parking ticket, thatâ€™s how dangerous this job is, for him showing that restraint it was unbelievable."
