Roosebelt Blvd Speed Camera Fines Start 8/1; PIAA Approves Fall Sports; Arch Philly Grade Schools

The warning period for speed cameras installed along the Roosevelt Boulevard is about to expire. Cameras were installed in eight locations on June 1. There has been a 60-day grace period where speeders were just sent warnings. The vendor in charge of the cameras said the volume of warnings is one of the highest in the country. Drivers were regularly caught going 100 mph in the 55 mph zone. Starting Saturday August 1, anyone going 11 mph or more over the posted limit would automatically be sent a ticket by the Philadelphia Parking Authority. Fines incrementally go up to $150. However, you won't get any points on your license.

The speed cameras are located at:

1. Roosevelt Boulevard and Banks Way
2. Roosevelt Boulevard and F Street
3. Roosevelt Boulevard and Deveraux Street
4. Roosevelt Boulevard and Harbison Avenue
5. Roosevelt Boulevard and Strahle Street
6. Roosevelt Boulevard and Grant Avenue
7. Roosevelt Boulevard and Red Lion Road (near Whitten Street)
8. Roosevelt Boulevard and Southampton Road (near Horning Road)

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Board of Directors voted to approve the minutes of various sport's steering subcommittees at a hearing on Wednesday, 7/29. They also approved the PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee recommendation to proceed with fall sports. Each sport's subcommittee had sport specific recommendations and suggestions to increase safety keeping in mind social distancing and sanitization guidelines. All activities must adhere to Pennsylvania Department of Health restrictions. Local school districts and conferences would make the final decision whether or not to participate in athletics. The inclusion of spectators at any event is not expected at this time.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced plans to open parish and regional elementary schools and special education services on a full-time, in-person basis this fall, while high schools will operate on a hybrid model. "The plans that were ultimately developed have a strong structural framework that seeks to provide the maximum educational experience for students. Key differences among the plans allow for best practices of meeting the needs of students who represent a broad range of physical, emotional, and intellectual growth within the Pre-K-12 spectrum," the Archdiocese said. The in-person model has "a greater impact at the elementary level as it allows time for students to develop spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically, and academically based on their levels of growth and maturity."
