Atilis Gym Bellmawr Owners Arrested; Philly Police Cars Set On Fire; Marlins COVID, Phillies/Yankees

The owners of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey, were arrested early on Monday morning, 7/27, for continuing to operate the fitness facility despite Governor Phil Murphy's coronavirus COVID-19 shutdown order and repeated court orders to remain closed. 33-year-old Ian Smith of Delanco Township and 51-year-old Frank Trumbetti, of Williamstown were each charged with one count of fourth-degree contempt, one count of obstruction, and one count of violation of a disaster control act. They were processed and released. They had first reopened Atilis Gym in May despite the statewide shutdown order. The owners did take steps inside the facility to follow social distancing and sanitization guidelines. They have received numerous citations and summons since and have fought the order in court saying the shutdown order on non-essential businesses was unconstitutional.

On Friday, 7/24, a judge ruled that they were in contempt of court and the state could shut them down. The owners have been living inside the facility and refusing to leave since Friday. "From July 24 through July 27, a number of individuals were observed entered and using the gym, a direct violation of the court order," the Camden County prosecutor's office said in a statement Monday. "Police said both owners refused to leave the gym when asked, leading to the charges."

Philadelphia police are investigating after several police cruisers were set on fire at various locations early Monday morning, 7/28. At least four police cars were set of fire. They were extinguished quickly and damage was minor. No one was injured. One happened around 2:30 a.m. at 39th and Chestnut Streets near the University City Police District offices. Police cameras captured a White man, wearing a flannel shirt, with a backpack, riding a white Cannondale bicycle away from the scene. A second was nearby outside the 16th District station at 39th Street and Lancaster Avenue. Another vehicle arson was at 7th and Chestnut in Old City. The fourth was at 10th and Vine in Chinatown. The fires were set in the wheel wells. Various devices were used, including Molotov cocktails. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said, "Quite frankly, it's a slap in the face, you know? Especially at that time of the morning and our officers, regardless of how many times, whether there is an anti-police sentiment or a lack of support, we still get up, we go to work and we work very hard," Outlaw said. "We're human beings and I think people forget that. To damage the tools, or one of the tools, that we have available to us to not only keep us safe but in order to allow us to do our job, it's a huge slap in the face.â€ There is now a $5,000 reward.

After four Miami Marlins players test positive for coronavirus COVID-19 on Sunday, 7/26, the team stayed in Philadelphia following their weekend series against the Phillies to self-quarantine. Further testing indicated that 12 players and two coaches have tested positive. As a result, the Marlin's home opener versus the Baltimore Orioles in South Florida on Monday night, 7/27, has been postponed. Their Tuesday game has also been postponed. The Phillies game against the New York Yankees at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Monday night has been postponed. MLB guidelines say, "The players will be isolated from the team until they test negative twice at least 24 hours apart, show no symptoms for 72 hours, and receive approval from team doctors."

Phillies players and staff went to Citizens Bank Park on Monday afternoon, 7/27. They drove through a COVID-19 testing facility in the parking lot and were then sent home. The results will be expedited. The Phillies visiting clubhouse is being completely sanitized and the visiting clubhouse staff is being quarantined.

MLB released this statement: "Tonight's scheduled games between the Miami Marlins and the Baltimore Orioles at Marlins Park and the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees at Citizen Bank Park have been postponed while Major League Baseball conducts additional COVID-19 testing. The members of the Marlins' traveling party are self-quarantining in place while awaiting the outcome of those results. Major League Baseball has been coordinating with the Major League Baseball Players Association; the Marlins; the Orioles; the Marlins weekend opponent, the Phillies; and Club medical staffs, and will continue to provide updates as appropriate."
