Original Tony Lukes Charged Tax Fraud; School Board to Vote Next Week; 23 LBI Lifeguards Test Pos+

The founder of popular South Philadelphia cheesesteak shop Tony Luke's and one of his sons have been indicted on federal tax evasion charges. 82-year-old Anthony Lucidonio Sr. and his son 54-year-old Nicholas Lucidonio, both of New Jersey, are charged with conspiring to defraud the United States, 19 counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false personal and corporate tax returns, and four counts of tax evasion. Officials say that the pair concealed over $8 million from the IRS by understating business receipts and paying employees cash under the table to avoid payroll taxes. This happened between 2006 to 2016. The indictment only names the Original Tony Luke's location at 39 E. Oregon Ave. It does not name Anthony Lucidonio Jr. (Tony Luke Jr.) who owns the other Tony Luke locations and has become the face of the franchise. Luke Jr. had a falling out with his brother and father a few years ago and is not involved in their business on Oregon Ave. The Lucidonios' lawyer released a statement, "Anthony 'Tony' Lucidonio and Nicolas 'Nicky' Lucidonio - the owners and operators of The Original Tony Luke's - dispute the criminal charges filed against them on July 24 and look forward to defending themselves in court. Tony and Nicky have fully cooperated with the government's investigation since its outset. The Original Tony Luke's will continue to serve its faithful clientele and provide gainful employment to its employees and their families."

The Philadelphia School Board virtual meeting held Thursday, 7/23, lasted 8 hours and ended after midnight as over 100 parents, teachers, staff, and students voiced their opinions on the proposed back-to-school plan. The plan as constructed offers two paths. A parent can choose to enroll their child in the all virtual digital academy, or the children can go back to school under a hybrid in-person/virtual schedule. The hybrid schedule would split the student body in half with one group going to the building on Monday/Wednesday and the other group going Tuesday/Thursday. Students will participate from home on their off days. Many who testified still seem wary of sending their children back to school this fall and feared there were still too many unanswered questions and unknown variables to guarantee safety. At the end of the session, the board voted 6-2 to allow Superintendent William Hite one week to incorporate all of the feedback and adjust the school district's plan. The board will meet again next week to vote.

The Long Beach Island Health Department is reporting that almost two dozen lifeguards from two towns have tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. "The health department started receiving reports of COVID-19 activity among Surf City lifeguards on Saturday, July 18 and Harvey Cedars lifeguards on Sunday, July 19," Health Department director Daniel J. Krupinski said. "We have reason to believe the case activity stems from common social gatherings outside of work on July 12 and 14." Surf City has had 12 positive cases and Harvey Cedars has had 11. All of the lifeguards are being quarantined for 14 days and will not be allowed back to work until they are cleared by doctors. Krupinski said, "Contact tracing is well underway, with full cooperation of both boroughs and beach patrol supervisors." Beaches will still be fully staffed.

UPDATE: 18 guards from Harvey Cedars have tested positive and 12 from Surf City.
