Teen Charged in Unborn Baby Death in Street Race; 300k Chickens Die in Fire; Pilot Lands on Rt. 422

A teen has been arrested after a pregnant woman was struck and critically injured and her unborn baby was killed following a crash during a street race on Broad Street early Monday morning, 7/20. 19-year-old Yaaseen Bivines has been charged with 3rd-degree murder of an unborn child, aggravated assault, DUI, reckless driving, racing on a highway, driving without a license and causing a death, simple assault, and other related charges. A 16-year-old teen driving the other car was also taken into custody. It happened just before 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Broad near Diamond Street. Bivines was driving a 2003 Ford Expedition at a high rate of speed purportedly racing the other teen. Neither had driver's licenses. Near Diamond Street, the SUV struck the rear of the other vehicle sending it into a tree. The SUV veered to the right, hopped the curb, and hit 27-year-old Gina Campbell Seldon who was sitting on a low concrete wall. Seldon was on a break from her job at the nearby McDonald's. She was seven months pregnant. Seldon was rushed to Temple University Hospital where doctors tried to save the unborn child but were unsuccessful. Seldon remains in critical condition. She has three other children at home. Bivines is being held on $1 million bond.

Several hundred thousand chickens died after a four-alarm fire broke out at a farm in Salem County, New Jersey on Monday night, 7/20. It happened around 8:30 p.m. at the Red Bird Egg Farm on the 100 block of Cemetery Road in Pilesgrove. Massive flames consumed the barns, melting the aluminum structures. The fire spread to three buildings. Firefighters had to truck in all the water to fight the blaze because there were no nearby hydrants. No people were hurt. 200,000 chickens were killed by the fire directly. A neighboring building lost power which stopped its fans from blowing. An additional 80,000 birds died in that building due to the heat from the fires and the hot weather. State and local police are investigating the cause of the fire.

A young pilot is being called a hero after he safely navigated an emergency landing onto a highway in Berks County on Monday night, 7/20. It happened around 9:30 p.m. in Exeter Township. The Cessna's engine failed forcing the pilot to land on Rt. 422 near Daniel Boone Road. He struck one car, causing minor damage. Neither he nor his two passengers were hurt. The Exeter Township Police compared him to Capt. 'Sully' Sullenberger who landed US Airways flight 1549 on the Hudson River. "Well done young man! #ExeterSully," police said.
