| Mayor Kenney and DA Krasner Respond to Pres. Trump; Philly's Trash Problem; NJ Allows Contact Sports |

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and District Attorney Larry Krasner responded Monday, 7/20, after President Donald Trump suggested that he would send federal law enforcement agents to several major US cities run by Democratic mayors, including Philadelphia, to deal with protestors and other violence. Trump was addressing the recent use of federal law enforcement agencies in Portland, Oregon, which has seen nightly protests since late May. "The police are afraid to do anything," Trump said. "They're restricted from doing anything. They can't do anything... I'm going to do something, that I can tell you," Trump said. "Because we're not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia, Detroit and Baltimore and all of these - Oakland is in a mess, we are not going to let this happen in the country, all run by liberal Democrats... We're going to have more federal law enforcement that I can tell you." Trump went on to talk about cities being besieged with gun violence not just the recent civil unrest.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney: "The president's threat is wrong on many levels. To send federal agents to police U.S. cities that have not requested such aid can only impede the work of local governments and exacerbate already heightened tensions in these cities. And to target cities that are led by Democratic mayors is clearly a politicization of federal resources that should outrage all taxpayers... That the White House seeks to impose federal involvement in this way, after months of abrogating its responsibility to lead a federal response to COVID-19, is both ironic and offensive. While the City of Philadelphia has not received any formal notification that federal agents will be sent here, we would use all available means to resist such a wrong-headed effort and abuse of power."
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner: "My dad volunteered and served in World War II to fight fascism, like most of my uncles, so we would not have an American president brutalizing and kidnapping Americans for exercising their constitutional rights and trying to make America a better place, which is what patriots do," Krasner said in a statement. "Anyone, including federal law enforcement, who unlawfully assaults and kidnaps people will face criminal charges from my office. At trial, they will face a Philadelphia jury. It's the least we can do to honor those who fought fascism, including those who are fighting it even now."
Philadelphia is dealing with a big trash problem, and it has nothing to do with littering. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the Philadelphia Streets Department, leading to lengthy delays in curbside pickup across the city. Trash complaints to Philly311 are up eight times normal. The union representing trash collectors, Local 427, says they have had more than 100 workers test positive for COVID-19. For every worker that tests positive, several more have to self-quarantine for 14 days because they were in contact with that person. City Councilman Brian O'Neill wrote a letter to Mayor Kenney saying that this is another public health crisis and that private trash companies should be hired to help. Charles Carrington, the President of Local 427, said, "That belongs to us and we're not going to let nobody come in here and do our job. That's just not going to happen." In the meantime, garbage is piling up on the curbs and causing a stink. Streets Department Commissioner Carlton Williams says they are now working at 125% to catch up, meaning they are gaining one extra day of trash pickup per week. The Streets Department is asking residents to put their trash out one day later than their normal pickup day for the week on July 20th. Williams says that you can also take your trash to one of six sanitation convenience centers. They are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Monday, 7/20, that contact drills and practices, as well as competitions, could resume today for high-risk sports. Those practices must be held in outdoor venues only. The executive order covers sports like football, rugby, cheerleading, and martial arts. "All sports will have to abide by a number of health and safety protocols, including screenings for athletes, coaches, and staff; limited equipment sharing; and strong requirements for disinfecting and sanitizing equipment. Additionally, sports under the oversight of either the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association or the NCAA must abide by those associations' rules."
