25yo Pregnant Woman Shot/Killed in Car; MontCo Contact Tracers Rebuffed; Bucks Students Face Shields

A 25-year-old pregnant woman has died after being shot in the face in Strawberry Mansion on Thursday afternoon, 7/16. It happened around 2:30 p.m. on the 2500 block of West Berks Street. The woman was sitting in an SUV after having just visited a relative. The shooter opened up the door and fired once inside, hitting her in the head. She was rushed to Temple University Hospital where she later died. She was four months pregnant. The man fled on foot. Police have video of a second man chasing after the shooter and returning fire. Authorities believe the incident was domestic in nature. They are looking for both of those men. "This is a broad daylight, middle of the day, sad example of some violence that we’re experiencing," Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Naish said.

Montgomery County officials spoke out about some troubling cases of non-compliance with health guidelines and the difficulty health officials and contact tracers are having with cooperation from members of the public. Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, shared two recent examples. A youth sports coach who had tested positive continued to coach several more games and even went to a 4th of July party. He admitted to not social distancing or wearing a mask. 12 players and three coaches were recommended to self-quarantine. However, the coach won't give any names for the people at the party so contact tracers can't inform them that they might have been exposed. "Non-cooperation with contact tracers can result in outbreaks that are substantial and can infect many, many, many people in our community," Arkoosh said. Another example is a June graduation party of around 100 people. People were not wearing masks or social distancing. Some positive cases have been identified, but no one is sharing names to contact tracers so they can inform others.

Bucks County officials announced that all students in the county will be receiving face shields for the upcoming school year. The Board of Bucks County Commissioners' Chair Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia said that students in the 13 school districts as well as all private schools will receive one. Face shields, as opposed to masks, allow students and teachers to see each others' mouths when speaking and make communication in the learning environment easier. Each school district and private school will be determining their own plans for returning this fall. They can at least count on having some equipment.
