Philly Officials Delay Removing Protest Camp; Philly Gyms Can Open 7/20; Car Chase Ends Deadly Crash

Philadelphia city officials announced on Thursday, 7/16, that they are postponing plans to close a protest homeless encampment near 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The city had planned to remove the encampment tomorrow Friday, 7/17, but officials say that conversations are still ongoing with camp representatives. "Conversations between the city and the group are ongoing and we're still hoping to reach a reasonable outcome. The city continues to make every effort to assist homeless individuals who are at the camp to connect to services and leave voluntarily," the city said in a statement. "We're postponing the closure because conversations with the group are ongoing and I plan to meet with several camp representatives next week," Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. "A mutual resolution has always been our preferred outcome."

Philadelphia health officials announced on Thursday, 7/16, that city gyms and fitness centers will be allowed to reopen next Monday, 7/20, with restrictions. Everyone inside the gym must wear a mask and maintain 6-feet of distance. Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said, "If you find it difficult to exercise with a mask on, don't go to the gym." Any classes must have 10 people or less. Outdoor exercise is encouraged where possible. The Health Department will be conducting unannounced inspections at gyms. If inspectors see that people are not wearing masks inside the building, it will be closed. If the spread of COVID-19 is identified in a gym, it will be closed. Gym owners will be receiving a letter with all the new requirements.

One person is dead and several others are injured after a traffic stop turned into a car chase and ended in a crash in Delaware County early Thursday morning, 7/16. It started around 1 a.m. near the intersection of MacDade Boulevard and Chester Pike in Collingdale when police pulled over a Ford Escape for a traffic violation. When the officer got out of his car, the suspect drove off. The suspect pulled over again at a McDonald's on McDade Blvd. When the officer got out of his car again, the suspect pulled away a second time hitting a Darby police cruiser. At the intersection of MacDade Boulevard and Oak Lane in Glenolden, the SUV struck another car. This time the man got out and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later. Inside the SUV were his three children, ages 3, 5 and 7. There were also two women who were injured. The driver of the other car that was struck was seriously injured and was transported to Crozier-Chester Medical Center. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Anthony Jones of Chester. Police found multiple handguns and narcotics on Jones and in his car. He was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including homicide by vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, recklessly endangering another person, assaulting a police officer as well as several other motor vehicle and weapons-related offenses.

UPDATE: The passenger that was killed has been identified as 18-year-old Angel MacIntyre. MacIntyre had just graduated from Sun Valley High School in Aston. She was planning on attending Keystone College in the fall.
