The School District of Philadelphia has announced its plan for returning students to school for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year amid the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. William Hite, Mayor Jim Kenney, and Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley laid out the plans on Wednesday, July 15. The district is going with a hybrid model with a split schedule of in-person instruction and virtual learning. Schools will be broken up into two groups. One group will go to school Monday/Wednesday and the other on Tuesday/Thursday. When not at the school building, students will participate in virtual learning. The entire school will be online on Fridays. Siblings will be placed in the same groups to be on the same schedule. The district will also offer an entire Digital Academy. Parents who do not want their children going back into a school building can enroll in 5 day/week virtual instruction. Pre-K and students with complex needs will go 4 days a week. Classroom size will be limited. Social distancing will be enforced throughout the building. Lunch will be eaten in the classroom. Masks or face shields must be worn by all students, faculty, or staff. The schools will be providing masks. Staff and students will be required to complete a self assessment each day before coming to school. This plan is meant to be flexible as the pandemic conditions change.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a body of a woman was found wrapped in plastic wrap inside a plastic container in South Philadelphia on Wednesday morning, 7/15. It happened around 10 a.m. at the intersection of S. 31st and Wharton Streets. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A man found the container and called police. A woman from the neighborhood said she noticed it yesterday and thought it was the trash. The investigation is ongoing.

The invasive spotted lantern fly has returned to the Philadelphia area and is spreading into new locations after hatching earlier this spring. The species is native to Asia and was first seen in North America in Berks County in 2014. It feeds on trees and other vegetation. Another invasive asian species, the Tree of Heaven, is a particular favorite. Right now, the insect is in its late larvae stage. You may have seen these strange black bugs with white spots, and perhaps red backs, bouncing around your backyard. (see photo below) Soon they'll morph into their adult stage with colorful spotted wings. The insect has no natural enemies here and multiply by the thousands. They'll destroy trees and some crops if they continue to go unchecked. Researchers are working to develop strategies to contain the spread of the infestation, however, in the meantime if you see one of these creatures... squish it.
