The Washington, D.C. NFL franchise announced on Monday, 7/13, that it is retiring the team name 'Redskins' and the team's associated logo featuring a Native American man with feathered headdress. This comes after the completion of a 'thorough review' of the name announced on July 3. The team says that majority owner Dan Snyder and Coach Ron Rivera "are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years." The team has been called the "Redskins" since 1933 when the franchise was still based in Boston and played at Fenway Park. It had previously been called the "Braves." The team name has been under scrutiny for many years not only for being Native American related, but because it is regarded as a racial slur. The controversy was brought back to the forefront following recent calls for racial justice following the death of George Floyd. Large team sponsors like FedEx, Nike, and PepsiCo pushed for the team to change the name. FedEx threatened to drop their sponsorship, which includes the naming rights of the stadium. The new name and logos have not been announced. Washington is a division rival of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. They play two games every year, home and home.

A woman was struck and killed by a SEPTA bus while she was walking in West Philadelphia on Monday morning, 7/13. It happened around 10:35 near the intersection of 56th and Vine Streets. The 37-year-old woman was crossing the road when she was hit by a Route G bus traveling northbound on 56th Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is under investigation.

Three teenagers were killed in a single-car crash on the Atlantic City Expressway as they were headed down the shore on Sunday, 7/12. It happened around 3:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Hammonton Exit in Atlantic County. 19-year-old Nijul Crawford of Philadelphia was driving when he lost control. The car overturned and rolled into the woods along the highway. He suffered non life-threatening injuries. His passengers, 15-year-old Emmanuel Crawford of Camden, 16-year-old Marcus Crawford of Camden, and 19-year-old Maryha Toro of Philadelphia, were killed. The two boys were his younger brothers and Toro was his girlfriend. More family members were traveling in a car nearby and witnessed the crash. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
