Fire Damages Homes in Parkside; 6yo Shot/Killed Bloody Weekend; Center City Protest Against Kenney

A fire damaged a large building converted into apartments in West Philadelphia on Sunday morning, 7/5. It happened around 6:30 a.m. on the 4200 block of Parkside Avenue in the Parkside neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to heavy flames coming from the roof of the three-story building. "I looked up at the skylight and I saw smoke coming out," said Inayah Hart. "I ran and pulled the fire alarm and ran back in and tried to grab important papers, but it filled up with smoke so fast so I just ran out." The fire was placed under control at 7:30 a.m. No one was injured. 11 people were displaced by the fire. The cause is under investigation.

A 6-year-old was shot and killed in Philadelphia's Holmesburg neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, 7/5. It happened before 1 p.m. on the 4600 block of Kendrick Street. The boy was shot in his left chest and taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital by a family member. The child was pronounced dead at 1:36 p.m. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Four other people were shot and killed on Sunday afternoon. A 37-year-old female was shot 12 times in her midsection at about 2:13 p.m. in the 1900 block of Clarence Street in Kensington. She died at Temple University Hospital. A weapon was recovered and an arrest was made.

A 20-year-old man died from multiple gunshots to the head about 3:20 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of South 17th Street in Point Breeze. No weapons were recovered and there were no arrests.

A 43-year-old man was found dead at 4:45 p.m. Sunday on the 2300 block of North Croskey Street in North Philadelphia with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

A 20-something man was shot multiple times throughout his body just before 6:30 p.m. on the 2100 block of East Ann Street in Kensington. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced at 6:44 p.m.

Since Friday, 27 people have been shot in the City of Philadelphia, 5 of the shootings have been fatal.

"This weekend's horrific violence is a stark reminder that COVID-19 isn't the only crisis plaguing our city," Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. "Gun violence continues to traumatize our communities and cut Philadelphiansâ€™ lives tragically short."

There was a large protest and march in Center City Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, 7/5. The rally was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. It started at City Hall around 1 p.m. They were protesting against police brutality and systematic racism. More specifically they were calling for the resignation of Mayor Jim Kenney for his leadership role in the city's overall response after protesters flooded the Vine Street Expressway I-676 on June 1. Police fired canisters of tear gas, mace, and rubber bullets and cornered mainly peaceful demonstrators trying to flee the highway that day. Today, the group marched north on Broad Street from City Hall to Vine Street. They entered an already closed I-676, but this time they were not confronted by authorities. The group of several hundred march down I-676 and exited at 22nd Street. They then turned down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and returned to City Hall. Last week, Kenney and Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw publicly apologized for the use of force against protesters after the New York Times released a video report on the incident. Outlaw also announced a moratorium on the use of tear gas. Today's protesters demand more.
