Military Flyover for 4th of July; Former Phillies Pitcher Dies in Crash; Delco Officer Fired

Various military planes from the Department of Defense participated in a 4th of July flyover called 'Salute to the Great Cities of the American Revolution.' The planes flew over Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore on Saturday, 7/4. The flight included the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, followed by B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers, F-15 and F-22 fighters, and U.S. Marine Corps F-35 fighters. In Philadelphia, they flew over Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell around 5:15 p.m.

A former pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies organization died in a plane crash in Utah on Friday morning, 7/3. 35-year-old Tyson Brummett was piloting a Cessna 172 when it crashed in the Wasatch Mountains outside Salt Lake City. The plane took off from South Valley Regional Airport in West Jordan and crashed near Box Elder Peak in American Fork Canyon just before 8 a.m. Friday. Also on board were Brummett's friend 35-year-old Alex Blackhurst Ruegner, and Ruegner's uncle and aunt, 62-year-old Douglas and 60-year-old Elaine Blackhurst. Brummett was a 5th round draft pick of the Phillies in 2007 out of UCLA. He appeared in one MLB game for the Phils. He struck out two batters in a game against the Washington Nationals in 2012. He was also a part of the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers organizers.

A Delaware County police officer has been fired after posting a threatening message to local businesses on the local FOP Facebook page and an even more intimidating version on his personal page. The Media Borough Council voted to terminate the police sergeant at an emergency meeting on Friday afternoon, 7/3. Sgt. Robert "Skippy" Carroll is also the vice-president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 27. On the Local 27 page he posted, "If you choose to speak out against the police or our members, we will do everything in our power to not support your business. 1st Vice President Robert "Skippy" Carroll." He reposted the same message on his personal page, but added, "Try us. We'll destroy you." The posts were reportedly targeted at one merchant in particular after an online argument. The merchant and Carroll have since shook hands.

At the time of the incident the Local 27 issued this statement:
"Recently, a team member of ours posted an inappropriate comment on this platform directed at our business community, we offer our sincere apology and ask for your forgiveness. This post did not meet the integrity or values of our 11-hundred members and we're sorry for the mistake.

We promise to do better and we have heard loud and clear the anguish of those in Delaware County and across the nation. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our business community, residents and law enforcement as we address concerns raised by peaceful demonstrators and protesters. Our officers pledge to serve our boroughs and townships with dignity, respect and professionalism."

On Friday they issued this statement:
"The Borough's actions will be challenged. We trust in the process and look forward to a positive resolution of this unfortunate situation.

Skippy is an exceptional Police Officer. His social media comments have been grievously misperceived.

An investigation into the circumstances that precipitated his postings have clearly indicated a miscommunication between Skippy and a local merchant.

It appeared to Skippy that the merchant was absolving those who threatened the safety of law enforcement personnel. The merchant later advised that his comments were not intended to convey that message.

That situation has been amicably resolved as between them. That should have concluded the issue.

I hope that our community comes to realize that Sgt. Carroll has contributed 27 years of his life to faithful service and that any assertion of racial bias is unsupported and undeserved. Understanding flows both ways."
