Philly Officials Announce Crime Policy; Pilot Crashes Into Surf City Ocean; DE 12 Suspects Wanted

Philadelphia officials announced new policies to help reduce gun violence and hold violent offenders accountable. The program is called Gun Crimes Strategies & Prevention Collaborative and is a joint initiative between the District Attorney's Office and the Philadelphia Police Department. The program will embed two district attorneys in each of the city's six police divisions. The prosecutors will work alongside police to investigate violent crimes from the beginning. "We stand with victims of gun violence, we stand with law enforcement with their efforts to rein it in and we stand with community building and prevention, which are ultimately the surest of long-term solution," District Attorney Larry Krasner said. "The most important thing that we can do is build community at the same time as we are also focusing on law enforcement," Krasner said. "If you shoot people, you need to be in jail. If you kill people, you need to be in jail."

A pilot was rescued after his banner plane crashed into the ocean just off shore on Long Beach Island on Saturday afternoon, 6/27. It happened around 3:30 p.m. at the 13th Street beach in Surf City. The Cessna 150 was flying northbound along the coast pulling an advertising banner when it started to have trouble. The pilot cut away the banner around 5th Street. The plane itself went down and crashed into the ocean a short distance from the shore and sank. Lifeguards on the beach paddled out to rescue the pilot. He was the only person on the plane. They brought him back to shore and he was able to walk back onto the beach. He only suffered a possible broken nose, but was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will both be investigating. The plane is at the bottom of the ocean for now.

Police in Delaware are investigating after as many as 12 suspects piled out of a truck and assaulted three victims on the street for no clear reason. It happened around 10 p.m. along Haines Street near Continental Avenue in Newark. The victims were walking down the street when a dark-colored Ford F-350 pick-up truck pulled up. Six to twelve suspects jumped out of the truck and attacked the victims. Two males suffered facial and other injures. One man was knocked unconscious. They were both taken to the hospital. The female victim was struck in the face but refused medical attention. The suspects were described as being all males in their late teens/early twenties. Nothing was stolen.
