| Columbus Statue Removal a 'Public Process'; Police Captain Reassigned; Man Fired in BLM Sign Removal |

After a weekend of contention and clashes between protestors, residents, police, and even journalists, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced plans on Monday, 6/15, to launch a 'public process' to consider the future of the Christopher Columbus statue located in Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street. That process will be conducted by the Public Art Director through the Public Art Commission. The city does not have any immediate plans to remove the statue but will be installing a 'boxing apparatus,' presumably like a giant crate, around it on Tuesday, 6/16. The box was already being built on Tuesday morning.
"I believe that a public process will allow for all viewpoints-especially those of indigenous people whose ancestors suffered under the rule of European colonizers-to be considered. It's also my hope that by initiating this process, the current tensions in Marconi Plaza can end. I urge all South Philadelphians attempting to protect the statue to stand down and have your voices heard through the public process," Kenney said in a statement.

Philadelphia Police Captain Lou Campione, who was seen on video from Saturday, 6/13, telling an independent journalist from Unicorn Riot to leave the area, has been reassigned from the 1st District in South Philadelphia. Campione, a 43-year veteran, warned the journalist that he was 'inciting a riot' by filming the crowd and gave him three quick warnings to vacate, which the videographer did. The journalist had earlier been assaulted and had his bike tires slashed by the crowd gathered on Marconi Plaza. This was just one of several police command changes made on Monday. "Command-level changes are not uncommon," Police spokesperson Sekou Kinebrew said. "The changes were not related to any specific event or circumstance." A large group gathered on Tuesday afternoon, 6/16, near Broad Street and Oregon Avenue for a rally in support of Captain Campione and the police in general.
A man caught on video tearing down Black Lives Matter signs made by children from a playground fence has now lost his job. 61-year-old Michael Henkel was recorded removing cardboard/poster signs from a chain link fence at Columbus Square Park near 12th and Reed in South Philadelphia. A woman said, "That's not your property." He responded, "I know. It's the city's. I had to pay for this." She said, "Oh, you paid for that?" He said, "My taxes pay for this place, just so you know. so I can do whatever I want... I'm always around here too." She said, "Great, I live right here too. Black Lives Matter!" He responded, "Not to me they don't." There were a few obscenities thrown in for good measure on his part.
Henkel worked as a writ-supervisor in the First Judicial District of Philadelphia Family Court. He was fired for multiple violations of the state court system’s Code of Conduct and the Non-Discrimination and Equal Employment Policy as a result of this incident. "The Court takes this incident very seriously and believes Mr. Henkel's behavior as shown in the video is egregious and totally unacceptable for an employee of the Courts,†family court spokesperson Martin O'Rourke said in a statement. The signs were made by children and placed during a kid-friendly march on Friday afternoon, 6/12. Neighbors have already begun replacing the messages with new signs.
