National Guard Leaving Philadelphia; 1 Killed, 6 Injured in Shootout; 2 Teens Missing in Schuylkill

The Pennsylvania National Guard is leaving the City of Philadelphia on Wednesday, 6/10, after being in the city for more than a week to help with security during protests. The National Guard is in the process of demobilizing and dismantling their posts. They will remain in the area for at least the next few days in case they are required and need to redeploy quickly. The National Guard helped protect landmarks and areas in Center City as well as property like City Hall and the Municipal Services Building after some protests turned violent during the first weekend of demonstrations. That freed Philadelphia Police to handle incidents of vandalism and looting that were happening across the city, in addition to other duties.

One person was killed and 6 others injured in a shootout at a Philadelphia Housing Authority apartment complex in the Poplar neighborhood just before midnight on Tuesday night, 6/9. It happened in the courtyard of the Spring Garden Apartments on the 600 block of Perth Place. Police say that 50 shots were fired and bullets struck homes, windows, and cars. They recovered firearms and cash left at the scene. The six injured took themselves to either Jefferson or Temple hospitals. One man is 57-years-old, the others are in their 20s, including one woman. Two of the younger men are in critical condition, the others are stable. Around 2 a.m., police discovered the fatal victim, a male, on the 600 block of 8th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are trying to piece together what happened and the possible motive for the shooting.

Police are searching for two boys who went missing after swimming in the Schuylkill River on Wednesday night, 6/10. It happened around 7:15 p.m. near 56th Street and Eastwick Avenue in the Kingsessing neighborhood. The 15-year-old and 14-year-old boys were last seen entering the river there, but have not been seen since. Crews are searching the river and surrounding area. The boys' parents are at the scene.

UPDATE: Police say that three teens went down to the water near Bartram's Gardens. The 14yo jumped in and was having trouble swimming. The 15yo old jumped in after him to help. Neither have been seen since. The third boy went for help. (see photo below)

UPDATE: 11:12 p.m. Police have found two bodies in the river near where the boys were last seen. They have not made official positive identifications yet.

UPDATE 6/11: The boys bodies were found in the river and have been identified as 15-year-old Quadir Beverly and 14-year-old Mekhi Massaquoi.
