'End Racism Now' Painted on Girard Ave in Fishtown; Explosion in Lehigh Co.; Bear Spotted in Delco

This afternoon and evening, Tuesday, 6/9, Philadelphia Police Captain William Fisher joined alongside Pastor John Brice and hundreds of other demonstrators to help paint a temporary message along Girard Ave. right outside the 26th District police headquarters in Fishtown. The message read 'END RACISM NOW' and included the names of several victims. The large message in yellow stretched from E. Montgomery Avenue and E. Berks Street. It emulated the "Black Lives Matter" message painted in large block letters along 16th Street in Washington, D.C. near the White House last week by the city's mayor. This message was meant to be short lived, as firefighters attempted to wash it away after the event. As of right now, the paint is still on the pavement. Firefighters will be back with a different solution. Organizers hope to find a more permanent location to paint the message.

UPDATE: The message on the street was not removed. The city said, "The City allowed organizers to engage in this activity and indicated to them that it was fine for the installation to stay until it faded naturally. Organizers, however, fully intended to have the display removed overnight - after capturing inspiring images - to ensure the streets remained safe with clear driving lines. They wanted to work on finding a more permanent location for this type of art display. Based on the organizers' request to the City, the Fire Department attempted to clean off the paint. Ultimately, fire hoses could not remove it, and the display is still visible. The City has no intentions of removing it at this time."

Last Monday, June 1, citizens armed with bats, shovels, and axes stood outside the 26th District police headquarters vowing to 'protect' the neighborhood and the police from whatever rioting and looting came their way. The vigilantes, who were also 'patrolling' the neighborhood and threatening others, seemingly had the approval of police that night. There is a petition with tens of 1000s of supporters calling for the resignation of Captain Fisher.

A man has died and another is injured after a series of explosion on a property in Lehigh County. It happened before 3 p.m. on the 8400 block of Orchard Road in Lower Milford Township. Two trailers containing fireworks somehow caught fire and went off. The homeowner and another man were in the trailers at the time. The Pennsylvania State Police and the ATF are investigating.

A black bear has been seen roaming around Delaware County the past few days. It has been spotted along Garnet Mine Road in Upper Chichester Township walking through a man's backyard. It was also seen in nearby Bethel Township near Clayton Park. If you see the bear, don't approach it. Call the police or report the sighting to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
