Philly Officer Surrenders for Assault; Camps, Spraygrounds, Pools; PPA Enforcing 6/15, SEPTA Masks

Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Joseph Bologna surrendered to authorities at the 15th District on Monday, 6/8. Bologna is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of an instrument of crime among other charges. He is accused of striking and injuring a protester near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Monday, June 1. A large supportive crowd gathered outside the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police headquarters as Bologna left to go turn himself in. He has been suspended 30 days with intent to dismiss. He was a 30-year veteran of the force.

"We are trying to be fair. Accountability has to be equal. This moment demands a swift and evenhanded response to violent and criminal acts based on the facts and evidence,â€ District Attorney Larry Krasner said on Friday. "Americans are taking to the streets to demand a remaking of political, economic and legal systems that serve the powerful at the expense of citizens' health, welfare, and lives. There can be no safety or peace without justice. My office will continue to hold people who cause harm to others equally accountable."

Philadelphia officials say that summer camps and spraygrounds at recreation centers will open on July 6. Both will follow social distancing and sanitation guidelines from the health department. "Summer camp is a staple for families across the city, and a way to keep kids safe and engaged over the summer," Mayor Jim Kenney said. "We know camp will look different this year. Parks & Rec is following clear guidance from State and local health experts to run camps in the â€˜Safer at Homeâ€™ phase of reopening. We are asking families to take some important steps to help keep our communities safe and stop the spread of COVID-19."

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that public and private pools in the state can reopen on Monday, June 22. Guidelines and protocols for social distancing and sanitation will be released on Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority announced Monday, 6/8, that is will resume enforcement of parking meters and kiosks in Center City and University City next Monday, June 15. It had previously announced that it would start that enforcement today. The PPA also said it would begin enforcing meters and residential parking limits in the rest of the city on June 22. The PPA encourages use of the PPA's mobile payment app, meterUP, for contactless payments.

Starting today, Monday, 6/8, SEPTA is now requiring all riders to wear a mask or face covering. Previously, the policy 'strongly urged' customers to wear a protective face covering.
