Frank Rizzo Mural Removed in South Philly; No Philly Curfew Sun. 6/7; 9 Horses Die in Crash

A mural depicting former Philadelphia Mayor and Police Commissioner Frank Rizzo was painted over this morning in South Philadelphia. The prominent mural stood at 9th and Montrose Streets near the Italian Market for nearly 25 years. A statue of Rizzo was removed by the city last week. It had stood outside the Municipal Services Building across from City Hall since 1999. Both the mural and the statue have been targets of repeated vandalism. Rizzo's hard on crime tactics have been called out as racist and corrupt.

Murals Arts said, "Mural Arts is grateful that we were able to work with the owner toward this positive resolution, and look forward to collaborating with the community on a new mural project that can reflect the fabric of S. 9th Street... We know that the removal of this mural does not erase painful memories and are deeply apologetic for the amount of grief it has caused. We believe this is a step in the right direction and hope to aid in healing our city through the power of thoughtful and inclusive public art... In the coming weeks, we will be laying the groundwork for creation of the new mural, which will include an extensive community engagement and artist selection process. We will make further announcements regarding next steps in the near future."

Philadelphia officials announced that there will NO curfew enforced tonight Sunday, June 7. This is the first night since May 30 that the city has not enacted an overnight curfew in the wake of protests. The eight straight curfew nights began at either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. and lasted until 6 a.m.

There are also NO traffic restrictions or street closures in Center City on Sunday, June 7. Officials had been closing off a traffic box in Center City this past week as protests took to the streets.

A trailer carrying 10 horses crashed into the median of the New Jersey Turnpike early Sunday morning, 6/7, killed 9 of the animals. It happened around 3 a.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 68.8 in East Windsor, Mercer County. The truck pulling the trailer hit the median and burst into flames. The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. One horse survived and was treated at the scene. The trailer was coming from Florida. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
