Thousands Protest in Philadelphia Saturday; Daylin Leach Loses Primary; Shooting Injures Man/Woman

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Center City on Saturday, 6/6, continuing to rally against racism and police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police officers on May 25. Today's event was the largest protest so far in Philadelphia. The first was last Saturday, which started peacefully and ended in violent looting. Today's was peaceful all day. It started at the Art Museum and proceeded to march down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway towards City Hall. The large group went counterclockwise around City Hall and then north on Broad Street. They eventually turned west on Spring Garden and back towards the Art Museum.

Some people then either left or went back to City Hall. There was another protest scheduled at the Octavius Catto statue by the Divine 9 black sororities and fraternities. Mayor Jim Kenney and Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw both joined the crowd in taking a knee. Former Philadelphia Eagles' safety Malcolm Jenkins spoke to the crowd outside the African American museum on 7th and Arch Streets. Center City streets were closed this afternoon due to the anticipated large crowds.

The Philadelphia Department of Health encourages anyone participating in a demonstration to wear a mask. Masks were handed out for free at today's events. Also, monitor yourself for any symptoms of coronavirus COVID-19.

State Sen. Daylin Leach has lost his bid for a fourth term in the 17th District. Amanda Cappelletti has defeated Leach in the district that straddles Montgomery and Delaware counties. She had the support of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Governor Wolf. Leach had lost the support of Democratic leaders after allegations of inappropriate touching of female staffers. Cappelletti, an attorney, is the vice chair of the East Norriton Board of Supervisors and the former head of public policy for Planned Parenthood. She was also a fellow for the ACLU of Pennsylvania.

A man and a woman have been hospitalized after a double shooting in Philadelphia's Fairhill section late Saturday afternoon, 6/6. It happened around 5:15 p.m. on the 2900 block of Waterloo Street. A 33-year-old woman was shot in the face and a 33-year-old man was shot in the leg and buttocks. Both are in stable condition at the hospital. Police say that no weapon was recovered and no arrests have been made.
