NJ Gov Picks Fabiana Pierre-Louis for Supreme Court; Gun Shop Arrest; SEPTA Mask Policy; Mass Resume

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will nominate Fabiana Pierre-Louis to the state Supreme Court. She would become the first black woman on the court if she is confirmed. "Tomorrow, I will submit Fabiana's name to the New Jersey State Bar Association's Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee, and I look forward to their review, and upon their approval, to Fabiana's formal nomination," the governor said. She would be replacing Walter Timpone, who reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70 this November. Pierre-Louis is a partner at Montgomery McCracken in Cherry Hill. She previously was an Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey and was the attorney-in-charge of the Camden branch office. "I have spent my entire legal career in New Jersey, both private practice, and in government service as an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorneyâ€™s Office," Pierre-Louis said. "It is extremely humbling to have the opportunity to continue the proud tradition of the New Jersey Supreme Court's commitment to justice, equality, and fairness. I would like to thank Governor Murphy for this honor, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of New Jersey."

The Philadelphia District Attorney's office has charged a 17-year-old for his role in a botched burglary at a South Philadelphia gun range early Tuesday morning, 6/2, that left one man dead. 17-year-old Khaleef Brown is charged with burglary and robbery among other charges. It happened around 4:15 a.m. at Firing Line Inc. on the 1500 block of S. Front St. in Pennsport. Four men used bolt cutters to cut the lock on the front gate and bust in the door. They made their way up to the second floor where the 67-year-old owner had been staying overnight due to previous burglary attempts. He saw them approach on surveillance video. A 29-year-old burglar had a gun. The owner opened fire three times. He his the 29-year-old in the head killing him. Brown was struck in the shoulder and fled. He eventually went to Jefferson Hospital seeking treatment. That's where police questioned him about the injury and tied him the burglary. "The facts we know and the law are clear that the business owner's use of force while inside his own property against a burglar accompanied by others who was entering with a gun in his hand was justified. It is fortunate for the City of Philadelphia that this large cache of guns and ammunitions were not taken and sold on the street," District Attorney Larry Krasner said. The other two suspects are still at large.

SEPTA announced that they will now require that riders wear a mask or face covering while on SEPTA services starting June 8. In April, SEPTA had a short-lived policy that required masks but quickly changed it to 'strongly urge customers' to wear one. Video of a confrontation between a driver and passenger resulted in the passenger being removed from the bus by police. SEPTA's policy became more lenient after that. The stricter policy is 'to help continue efforts to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.'

The celebration of public mass will resume at parish churches in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia this weekend after being suspended since March due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. There will be measures taken to ensure the continued safety of all who come and gather at the church. First, Archbishop Perez has extended the dispensation for attending Sunday mass so you do not have to feel pressured to attend if you are sick, compromised, or uncomfortable. Parishes that have been streaming services have been encouraged to continue during this transition time for those at home. Churches will only be filled to 50% capacity and social distancing will be in place between people outside your family group. Masks must be worn inside the church building. Gathering before or after mass is discouraged. The church will be routinely sanitized. There may be other guidelines and requirements to follow.
