Philly Mayor Announces Steering Committee; 3-Alarm Fire in Somerton; State Stores Reopening; NBA/NHL

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced on Thursday afternoon, 6/4, the creation of a steering committee 'to support our residents and move to a place of reconciliation and healing.' The committee will include civic and faith leaders, representatives of community-based organizations, and members of the LGBTQ community. It will be focused on 'the long-term, on reconciliation, on understanding, and on listening' and will look at 'public safety, criminal justice reform, and the underlying factors of what experts call "structural violence," particularly pervasive poverty.' Kenney said that this 'is long overdue. The voices of those who have taken to the streets and their demands to be heard have led us to this point.'

It has become increasingly clear to me that our administration and many public servants, including me, need to find a better way to listen.

A Philadelphia firefighter was injured in a massive 3-alarm fire that damaged multiple homes in the Somerton neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, 6/4. It started around 3:30 p.m. on the 15100 block on Beverly Drive in Northeast Philadelphia. Heavy flames and smoke could be seen coming from several different townhomes along the block. 150 Philadelphia firefighters responded to the scene to fight the blaze in the heat. One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. The fire was brought under control around 5:45 p.m. 20 people were displaced from their homes. The cause may have been utility wires.

Fine Wine and Good Spirts will be reopening 176 shops to in-store shopping in mostly Southeastern Pennsylvania when those counties enter the 'yellow' phase of the state's reopening plan on Friday, June 5. Those stores are located in these counties: 14 in Berks County, 31 in Bucks County, 19 in Chester County, 17 in Delaware County, 13 in Lackawanna County, 19 in Lancaster County, 17 in Lehigh County, 33 in Montgomery County, and 13 in Northampton County. Stores in Philadelphia will not be opening. 31 Philadelphia stores and 1 Delaware County store will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to damage from recent looting. However, curbside pickup will resume at 17 Philadelphia stores Friday after being closed all week. For stores that are open, masks must be worn by customers and employees. No more than 25 people including employees will be allowed in a store at one time. The first hour of the day will be reserved for at risk shoppers. Stores will be frequently cleaned.

The NBA board approved a plan to return to play which would involve 22 teams playing 8 additional regular season games before playoffs. All games will be played at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. The Players Association has to approve the plan. Play could start on July 31.

The NHL will move to the Phase 2 in their return-to-play plan. Players can return to their teams' training facilities in cities that allow such activities. The Flyers train in Vorhees, NJ, and New Jersey has made provisions for professional sports activities to resume. Players can only have small group (six at a time) skating sessions with no coaches on the ice. Phase 3 would be the formal start of training camp which does not have a date. The format for the post season has been determined. The qualifying round for the bottom 8 teams will be a best of five. The top 4 teams in each conference will be playing a round robin to determine seeding. Each successive round will be reseeded instead of following a bracket. The remaining rounds will be best of 7. The two host cities have not been announced.
