PA Emergency Disaster in Delaware and Montgomery; Wolf Extends Mail-In Vote Count in 6 Counties

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf amended the emergency disaster declaration in response to violent unrest that has broken out across the state to now include Montgomery, Delaware, and Erie counties. The declaration originally included Philadelphia, Dauphin, and Allegheny counties. Peaceful protests have led to violence include looting, vandalism, and arson in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh. It has also spilled out into Upper Darby, Delaware County, and King of Prussia, Montgomery County. "People have every right to speak out and demonstrate, but it's unacceptable to take advantage of protests to incite violence, harm others and destroy property," Gov. Wolf said. "I amended this declaration to add more counties affected by the violence that erupted after peaceful protests in Erie, Delaware and Montgomery counties over the weekend." On Monday, 6/1, Wolf and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney toured areas of West Philadelphia that were destroyed on Sunday, 5/31.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed an executive order on Monday, 6/1, the day before the state's presidential primary election day, extending the deadline to count mail-in ballot returns in 6 counties. Allegheny, Erie, Montgomery, Dauphin, Delaware, and Philadelphia county election officials will be allowed to count ballots received up until Tuesday, June 9, at 5 p.m. That is a one-week extension from the original June 2 at 8 p.m. deadline. Those six counties are currently under a emergency disaster declaration due to violent unrest.

However, ballots must be postmarked by June 2. The deadline for hand-delivered ballots remains June 2 at 8 p.m.
