Center City Streets Shutdown River to River; PA Gov Wolf Declares Disaster; Kenney Say Rizzo Will Go

Philadelphia has closed all streets in Center City from Vine Street to South Street between the Delaware River and the Schuylkill River. That shutdown includes interstate highways and the Ben Franklin Bridge. SEPTA is also not running through Center City. Officials hope to keep crowds of people out and avoid a repeat of last night's destruction. Business owners and residents will be allowed in and out. A citywide curfew will be in effect again Sunday night, 5/31, starting at 8 p.m. until Monday morning, 6/1, at 5 a.m.

UPDATE: The curfew has been updated to now start at 6 p.m.

All retail establishments must close immediately. Any business owners or community members helping to secure businesses or clean up vandalized properties must finish those activities and return home by 5 p.m.

UPDATE: SEPTA is shutting down ALL service starring at 6 pm Sunday 5/31 until at least 6 am Monday 6/1.

The Pennsylvania National Guard has been called in and will arrive in Philadelphia on Sunday night to assist police.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed an emergency disaster declaration for Philadelphia, Dauphin, and Allegheny counties to provide necessary assistance and resources after the destructive escalation of protests recently in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. "People have every right to speak out and demonstrate, but it's unacceptable to take advantage of protests to incite violence, harm others and destroy property," Gov. Wolf said. "This declaration authorizes the commonwealth and its agencies to assist municipalities in their response to de-escalate violence and keep our communities safe."

"I appreciate Governor Wolf for heeding our request for additional state support," said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. "This emergency declaration will help Philadelphia access resources and police support from other jurisdictions, including other states, as we manage the impact of this weekend's demonstrations."

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said on Sunday, 5/31, that the statue of former Mayor and Police Commissioner Frank Rizzo that stands in front of the Municipal Services Building across from City Hall will be removed within another month or so. "I can't wait to see it go away," the mayor said. The statue was targeted by protestors on Saturday. It was covered in graffiti and set on fire. Demonstrators tried to topple the bronze statue, but were unsuccessful. Kenney alluded to the fact that the statue is well secured and therefore difficult to move, slowing his administration's response in moving it previously. It also sits above an underground transit concourse that would be disrupted during removal. The statue was completely clean on Sunday morning, leaving no evidence of Saturday's turmoil. Kenney said it was cleaned just as everything else in the area. There was no political message in the scrubbing.
