Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney Announces Mandatory Curfew 8 p.m to 6 a.m. After Violent Protests

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has announced a mandatory curfew starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, 5/30, until 6 a.m. Sunday, 5/31, in response to today's protests in Center City.

UPDATE: Kenney has signed an executive order also adding a curfew for Sunday night, 5/31, into Monday morning, 6/1, again 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Only people who work in essential jobs are allowed out during that time. Of course, we are still in the 'red' phase of coronavirus COVID-19 reopening and are under 'stay-at-home' orders anyway. However, this order only allows you to leave your home to seek medical or law enforcement help.

The demonstrations on Saturday, 5/29, started out peaceful. The first happened around noon at City Hall. Participants were careful to socially distance and took a knee for 9 minutes in memory of George Floyd who died at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis earlier this week. The group then walked to the Art Museum steps and were joined by a larger group for an official Black Lives Matter Philly rally at 2 p.m.

When that rally was over many protestors then marched back into Center City and their numbers grew. That is when clashes between police grew more animated and the group of protestors became more violent. For the rest of the afternoon they were concentrated either around Broad and Vine or between City Hall and the Municipal Services Building. Several police cars were vandalized and set on fire. Businesses were smashed and looted. Protestors lit the statue of Frank Rizzo on fire and even attempted to topple it. Graffiti was sprayed all over. The actions are continuing at this moment.

UPDATE: Numerous stores have been broken into and looted along Walnut and Chestnut streets in Center City. Several fires have been set. Over a dozen officers have been injured and over a dozen arrests have been made.
