| Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney Gives Respect, Asks Same Ahead of Planned Protests on Saturday, 5/30 |

A number of demonstrations are planned in Philadelphia on Saturday, May 30, protesting the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers. At least one event will be held around noon at City Hall and another at 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Floyd's death was caught on cell phone video during an arrest on May 25th. All four officers involved in the arrest have been fired. 44-year-old former Officer Derek Chauvin was arrested on Friday, May 29, and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was seen on video kneeling on Floyd's neck for several minutes during the arrest until Floyd became unresponsive. Floyd could be heard saying, "I can't breathe."
Since video of the arrest went public on social media, peaceful protests in Minneapolis turned into violent riots that have been characterized by looting, wide spread destruction, graffiti, and massive fires. The unrest in Minnesota including nearby St. Paul has continued for days, largely unchecked. It has begun to spread to other cities across the country including Atlanta, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Portland, and Louisville.
On Friday, Mayor Jim Kenney acknowledged that Philadelphia would see the demonstrations reach our streets on Saturday. He vowed that the Philadelphia Police would respect the protestors and hopes that our city will not befall any of the destruction that has marred others.
"In the midst of a global pandemic, America's original sin of racism has not gone dormant," Kenney said at news conference. "Black Americans are outraged, and they should be. I'm outraged, too. As a white man, I will never know the heartbreak and trauma that the black community continues to experience. But I want black Philadelphians to know that I and other city leaders stand with them and are here to support them during this painful time."
"We're used to people protesting various issues. It's their right to protest. Our only rules are: You can protest as loud and as long as you want, but to destruct property or hurting someone else will not be permitted," he said. "We're very well schooled, from the [2000] Republican National Convention onward, on how to handle these events. We'll be respectful, and we expect people to be respectful and to express their anger, express their concern." |
