| PA Gov Wolf Announces 16 Counties to Green; Philabundance Emergency Food Site; Off-Duty Officer Shot |

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced that 16 more counties will move into the 'green' phase of the state's reopening plan next Friday, June 5. Those counties include Allegheny (Pittsburgh), Armstrong, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Clinton, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Indiana, Lycoming, Mercer, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland. The 'green' phase lifts most pandemic restrictions, except that businesses and individuals must follow CDC and PA Heath department guidelines. Today, 5/29, eight counties moved into the 'yellow' phase and 18 counties moved into the 'green' phase. Philadelphia and other southeastern counties are expected to move out of the 'red' phase by next week.
Philabundance has added an emergency food distribution site in South Philadelphia that will be active on Fridays throughout June. The drive-thru site is located in Lot N next to Citizens Bank Park. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through June 26. You must be in a car to get food at this site, no walk ups. Staff will place the boxes containing 35 pounds of food in your trunk as you pull up. For more information or to find other food sites go to: http://philabundance.org
A just off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot in the leg during an altercation with a man who had been reported missing and suicidal hours before. 48-year-old Lieutenant Robert Friel, a 28-year veteran out of the 3rd District, is expected to be ok after undergoing surgery at Jefferson University Hospital. It happened around 6:45 a.m. Friday, 5/29, on the 1400 block of South 10th Street near Passyunk Avenue. Friel had just left work when he noticed a gray Acura TL in the parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy that matched the description of a man who had been reported missing the night before. The subject had been reported missing from the 800 block of Cross Street around 10 p.m. Thursday. He was described as suicidal, armed, and high on drugs. Another officer also saw the car at the same time. They both went into the CVS and a struggle ensued. "During this struggle, the male discharged a 9 millimeter semi-automatic firearm, striking the lieutenant in the left leg. Also during the struggle, the male gained possession of the officer's service weapon and fired one shot, striking the floor. The male was subdued and placed into custody without further incident," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. The investigation is ongoing. |
