Better to Drop Off PA Mail-In Ballot Now; Woman Charged DUI Murder of 3yo; Arch Philly Guidelines

Record numbers of Pennsylvanians are taking advantage of the new law allowing voting by mail in this year's presidential primary. The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot has passed (Tuesday, May 26). As of right now, all mail-in ballots must be received by your county election office by this Tuesday, June 2, at 8 p.m. There are some county election offices, including Bucks County, that are in the courts trying to get an extension on the deadline for when ballots are due to be returned. It may be possible that even if you mail your ballot on Friday, 5/29, due to delays in the post office, your ballot might not arrive at the county office until after the election day deadline. In that case, it would be be counted. You may also have applied for a ballot on time, but due to delays, you will not receive it in time to have a chance to mail it back. If you do not receive your mail-in ballot in time, you will have to vote in person using a provisional ballot.

At this point, it is recommended that if you have a mail-in ballot and you filled it out, that you do not chance mailing it back, but actually drop it off in person. The Committee of Seventy and the Philadelphia City Commissioners have set up 10 locations in the city where you can drop off a ballot. You can also drop one off outside of City Hall. Other counties also have drop off locations. See links to the lists below. This Tuesday is also election day for anyone who is going to be voting in person. Make sure you check to see if your polling place has changed, as many places have been consolidated.

A Montgomery County woman has been charged with murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl in a DUI hit-and-run in Mayfair on Wednesday evening. 28-year-old Brionna Wright is charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault by vehicle, and related charges. It happened around 6 p.m. near Frankford and Magee Avenues. Wright first crashed into a car carrying two people at that intersection. She kept driving in her truck for a few blocks before crashing into a small SUV with a grandmother, mother, and 7-year-old and 3-year-old sisters before landing on a parked car. The 3-year-old was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The other people were treated for minor injuries. Wright was taken to Nazareth Hospital for treatment and blood tests. Police believed she was under the influence of a substance.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will resume in-person services on Saturday, June 6, after the Southeastern region of Pennsylvania moves to the 'yellow' phase of reopening under Governor Tom Wolf's orders. While the area is under the 'yellow' phase there will still be restrictions and guidelines to be followed in the church during services. "With the yellow phase, it is now possible to assemble safely in our churches for Mass and the celebration of the Sacraments. The 'yellow' phase still requires precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 and our corporate responsibility to observe them." Some of the guidelines include:

- The faithful will still be dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday mass. Parishes with streamed services will be encouraged to continue through the 'yellow' phase.

- All areas of the church will be properly sanitized routinely.

- Social distancing is to be followed between members of different households. No gathering before or after services. Masks or face coverings should be worn (except for receiving Holy Communion). Keep distance in line for Communion. The church itself will be at 50% capacity, seating every other pew.
