Walk-up Orders at Philadelphia Restaurants/Food Trucks; 200+ Memorial Day Party; PHL Homeless Moved

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced on Tuesday, 5/26, that as the region expects to move into the 'yellow' phase of Pennsylvania's reopening plan on June 5, the city can begin to ease some restrictions ahead of that date. He ordered, effective immediately, that restaurants and food trucks can now take walk-up orders in addition to the orders over the phone or internet for carry-out/delivery that they have previously been restricted to. Dine-in service is still not allowed. "As we continue to prepare for a phased reopening, with the expectation that our region will move to yellow on June 5, there are some steps we can take now to begin easing restrictions while we remain in red status," Kenney said Tuesday. There are still social distancing restrictions in place for walk-up service. Masks or face coverings are required at all times while in line and/or ordering. Establishments are responsible for keeping lines in and outside of their businesses under 10 people.

Philadelphia Police broke up a large Memorial Day party in North Philadelphia on Monday night, 5/25, with over 200 people gathered outside listening to a DJ and not wearing masks or following social distancing guidelines. It happened around 9 p.m. at an empty lot at 28th Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue in Brewerytown/Stanton. Police were called to the report of a fight and found the large gathering of people. It took nearly an hour for authorities to disperse the crowd. One man was arrested for disorderly conduct after he refused to leave and then put hands on an officer. Another man was arrested after an illegal gun was found in his car after he got into a minor traffic accident while trying to leave the area. Word about the party had spread on social media, drawing the large crowd. "They're dedicated to putting us back in the red as opposed to yellow. Again, God forbid. Even though these folks are doing what they're doing, we can continue to drive down these numbers and get back to some normal rhythm. If we don't get there, it will be their fault," Philadelphia Mayor Kenney said.

The remaining homeless population that had been using Philadelphia International Airport as a shelter the past few months during the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic were relocated on Tuesday, 5/26. The relocation efforts were going to be last Friday, 5/22, but advocates forced the city to move the date so the population could receive rapid coronavirus testing. People were given the option of being placed in a shelter, boarding a free SEPTA bus, or receiving emergency care. They were also given safety kits containing a mask, gloves, hand sanitizer, soap, and tissues. Around 60 specially crisis intervention trained police officers were at the airport to assist. There had been as many as 150 people sheltering at the airport, but the number at dropped to 50 who had slept there overnight Monday. The airport recently changed its policy to allow admittance to workers and ticketed passengers only. PHL is preparing for an increase in air travel as restrictions are loosened in the area and across the country. "The decision to limit building access to only those with airport business was a difficult one that followed months of attempted interventions, compassionate outreach and ultimately, a destruction of property and deterioration of safety."
