| NJ to Allow Outside Graduations July 6, Pro Sports Can Resume; DE to Lift Rental Ban, 250 Gatherings |

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Tuesday, 5/26, that high schools as well as colleges and universities in the state will be allowed to hold outdoor graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 starting on July 6. Those ceremonies will have to comply with social distancing guidelines and health and safety protocols at the time. Murphy said that the size of the ceremonies and attendance will be determined by health data available at the time of the ceremony. Some schools may need to hold more than one event depending on the size of the graduating class. "Certainly, these will be graduations unlike any others. The steps we are taking are necessary to ensure the health and safety of everyone in attendance but we are equally as confident that no one will ever forget the way we celebrate the class of 2020," Murphy said.
Murphy also announced that professional sports teams in the state can return to training and competition "if their leagues choose to move in that direction." He said that New Jersey has been in "constant discussions with teams about necessary protocols to protect the health and safety of players, coaches, and personnel." The Philadelphia 76ers' practice facility is in Camden and the Philadelphia Flyers practice facility is in Voorhees. The New York Jets, New York Giants, and New Jersey Devils all play and practice in North Jersey. The NHL and NBA are still working out how to restart their seasons or jump to the playoffs. *see NHL update below.
Delaware Governor John Carney announced on Tuesday, 5/26, that starting next Monday, 6/1, the ban on short-term rentals will be lifted. The mandatory 14-day quarantine on out-of-state travelers will also be lifted. Phase 1 of the state's reopening plan is also set to start on June 1. That will allow for certain retail businesses, restaurants, and other businesses to open with capacity restrictions while following social distancing and public health guidelines. Carney also announced that outdoor gatherings of 250 people will be permitted, for example weddings and graduations. "We want visitors to enjoy Delaware, our world-class beaches and restaurants, but it's important that everyone remember that COVID-19 is still very much active in Delaware," said Carney. "Delawareans who visited our beaches this past weekend acted responsibly, taking basic precautions to protect their families and their neighbors. Thank you. We all need to continue taking steps to protect our most vulnerable. Those steps aren't complicated. Wash your hands frequently. Maintain distance between yourself and others. Wear a face covering when you're in a public setting. Don't let up."
Sports
The NHL has announced a plan for play to resume. 24 teams will resume play, the top 12 in each conference by points percentage on March 12. The 2019-20 season is now considered complete. Two hub cities will be identified for each conference to play in. Phase 1 is now, where athletes are isolated at home. Phase 2 teams will be allowed to return to practice facilities. Phase 3 will be a formal training camp, starting no earlier than July 1. Phase 4 would begin the round robin games and qualifying rounds to determine playoff seeding. The top 4 teams would play a round robin. The bottom 8 would play a best-of-five qualifying round. There are no dates set for when play would resume. This plan could take play into the later summer. Possible hub cities include Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Edmonton, AB; Las Vegas, NV; Los Angeles, CA; Minneapolis, St. Paul, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Toronto, ON; Vancouver, BC. |
