Wilmington Distributes 19,500 Free Masks; Judge Closes Atilis Gym Bellmawr; Murder-Suicide in Bucks

The City of Wilmington along with several non-profit organizations undertook a huge effort to protect residents by handing out 1,000s of free, reusable face masks on Saturday, 5/23. Volunteers distributed 19,500 masks at various locations around the city earlier this afternoon. The masks are washable and reusable. They were distributed in neighborhoods where there are more vulnerable populations including the elderly and poor. The Wilmington Housing Authority will be distributing 5,000 masks to residents beginning next week and police officers will also carry a limited supply of masks to hand out this weekend as they patrol the city.

"Until there is a vaccine for the coronavirus, a face mask is one of the most important defenses to stop the spread of the virus," said Mayor Purzycki. "A mask coupled with social distancing can also help get the economy restarted and get people back to work. While giving away masks may seem trivial to some, in large areas of City neighborhoods one or more masks are needed for families to prevent sickness and death."

Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, Camden County, New Jersey, will be shut down over the holiday weekend after a state judge ordered the gym closed on Friday night, 5/22, at the request of Gov. Murphy. Atilis first opened for business on Monday, 5/18, in defiance of emergency coronavirus orders. The owners were cited each day, Monday-Wednesday, that they were open and several gym members were also given summonses. The NJ Heath Department ordered the gym closed on Thursday, but Atilis reopened on Friday. Superior Court Judge Robert Lougy granted a request from the New Jersey Department of Health to order the gym to remain closed until the order is lifted. In an Instagram post, co-owner Ian Smith called the governor a 'slimeball' and said that they would be filing an emergency injunction next week after the Memorial Day holiday.

Officials in Bucks County are investigating a murder-suicide that left two men dead on Friday afternoon, 5/22. It happened around 12:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on the 18000 block of Cornerstone Drive near Township Line Road in Lower Makefield. Police were called to a report of a shooting. They found a man shot multiple times to the face and body lying dead outside his apartment. Witnesses said that the shooter ran to another apartment. Neighboring apartments were evacuated and the SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene. SWAT entered the apartment at around 4:30 p.m. and found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head. He has been identified at 59-year-old Brian Moyer. The other victim's identity has not been released. Police are still investigating and the motive for the shooting is not yet known.

Sports
The NHL Player's Association executive board (1 rep from each team) voted to approve a 24-team playoff (29-2). The exact format and scenarios of the playoff still need to be decided and worked out with the NHL. Details could be finalized by next week. There could be a three-week training session in June with the restart happening early July.

The Executive Board of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) has authorized further negotiations with the NHL on a 24-team return to play format to determine the winner of the 2020 Stanley Cup. Several details remain to be negotiated and an agreement on the format would still be subject to the parties reaching agreement on all issues relevant to resuming play

The NBA is in talks to resume its season at Disney World in Orlando, FL in July.
