Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Perez Says Masses to Resume June 6; PA Guidelines For Summer Program

Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Perez announced on Friday night, 5/22, based on the earlier announcement that Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf anticipates the Philadelphia area will move to the 'yellow' phase of reopening on June 5, that daily and Sunday masses will resume on June 6. State and federal health guidelines will be followed when services resume such as capacity limits, social distancing, and hygiene protocols. Mass was suspended in the Archdiocese on March 18 and Pérez gave Catholics a dispensation from attending weekly mass. Church buildings were always open for individual prayer, as well as for the sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Matrimony, and funeral Masses at the discretion of the local pastor and with respect to public health guidelines. The Cathedral Basilica and many local parishes have been streaming weekly and special holiday services.

In a statement from the Archdiocese, "The administration of the Archdiocese has been working in consultation with public health officials to ensure that such a resumption takes place within the context of state approved guidelines and is actively working to provide appropriate guidance to its clergy so that all will be as prepared as possible when the public celebration of Mass begins again. All of us are eager to open the doors of Church wide for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist."

The Wolf administration released guidelines for how summer programs, camps, pools, day care, team sports, etc. can operate this summer for counties in the yellow and green phases. All of these activities must adhere to CDC and PA Health guidelines and sanitation protocols. Masks must be worn by anyone over 13. Day camps are allowed in the yellow phase, overnight camps are allowed in the green phase. Organized team sports are only allowed in the green phase. Pools can be opened in the yellow phase. Public playgrounds are also open in the yellow phase.
